London calling for star player

THE 2012 London Paralympics loom large on the horizon for national wheelchair basketballer Cobi Crispin.

A Mackay girl who now calls Melbourne home, Crispin has returned from the Women’s Under 25 World Wheelchair Basketball Championships in Canada last month with a silver medal.

Crispin co-captained the Australian team which finished second only to a powerful American outfit.

The Australian team exceeded all expectations, according to Crispin.

“It was awesome,” she told the Daily Mercury yesterday.

“We got the silver medal which was much more than we expected.”

Australia fielded a young team, according to the 22-year-old.

“It was also the first Under 25 World Championships ... we did not know what to expect,” she said.

Crispin was a dominant player for the Australian team.

She top-scored in all, but the final two matches when the opposition concentrated on nullifying her influence.

Crispin said she enjoyed the leadership role.

“It was very new for me,” she said.

“It was a good role to play and I enjoyed it.

“Our main goal was to play with heart and support each other.”

Crispin has called Melbourne home for the past two years where she plays with the Dandenong Rangers.

She has now set her national team sights on the 2012 Paralympics in London.

Crispin is back in full training following the world championships and will shortly leave with other members of the national senior team for a tournament tour of Germany.

She has also been given a leadership role with the senior team.

Crispin represented Australia in wheelchair basketball at the 2008 Beijing Paralympics.

On that occasion the Australian team defeated Japan 53-47 to claim the bronze medal.
