Perry Lakes Hawks Addressing Drugs in Sport at a Local Level

Perry Lakes Hawks Men’s and Women’s State Basketball League (SBL) Teams took part in a seminar on Wednesday night to learn nutrition and anti-drugs tips to maximize their sporting performance.

The Nutrition and Drugs in Sport talk at the Boulevard Centre, Floreat focused on educating local athletes on the dangers and myths about drugs in sport, and provided the nutritional advice to enable them to reach their potential and stay healthy without resorting to illegal or unnatural substances.

The Drugs in sport session was presented by Bridget Sapina from Sports Medicine Australia and covered the WADA banned list, illicit and recreational drugs, ASADA, testing and jurisdiction.

Nutritionist Simone Allen spoke to the basketballers on training and game day nutrition and the importance of having your body fuelled for long training sessions and games, with the right mix of fluids, carbs and protein from all of the five food groups.

Head Coach of the Women’s SBL Team, Craig “CJ” Jackson said, “We are providing the information to players about making the right choices in their nutrition and their health and well being while they commit to being the best they can be in their sport.

“Amongst the current negative publicity and media we have to remember the many young athletes that do the right thing and put in the hard work and here the club is supporting them in that ambition.”

“Modern sports science and nutritional advice is what athletes need to perform at their best and sustain their peak over a long period. At Perry Lakes Hawks that is the goal we are setting for our young athletes.”
