Fred Hier receiving his life membership from long time friend Paul May. Paul took over from Fred in 1992 as League President
Fred was integral to the successful merger of the former LeHunte Football League and Streaky Bay Football League, forming the Mid West Football League for its first season in 1988. Originating from the Kyancutta region, Fred has always been a wonderful ambassador for the game, starting with Kyancutta FC and involved in its merger with Warramboo FC in 1987, becoming Central Eyre FC. Fred was the Mid West FL inaugural President in the formation year of 1988, to and and including 1991.
He has influenced many facets of the game on the Central Eyre Peninsula and Eyre Peninsula, from player with Kyancutta FC, interleague representative, going on to coach at club and interleague levels for many years. Always passionate and proud of his teams, he enjoyed a great level of respect amongst all he had contact with. This involvement extended to the Eyre Peninsula Zone representative teams and the many regional and zone meetings that he attended.
Fred was awarded life membership of the Mid West Football League in 1995, in recognition of a lifetime of service to football. His ability to lead from the front with changes to club and competition structures, particularly in the mid '80's when the area was suffering from a series of droughts and difficult times for farmers, was outstanding. Weekend sport was an outlet for the whole community, and he was able to negotiate successfully through this trying period.
The Hier's sold the family farm and left the district in 1993, taking up a grazing block at Robertstown and living at Kapunda.
Fred is fondly remembered by the Mid West and Eyre Peninsula communities and thanked for his many years of dedication to sports and community in general
