Shane Green to lead the Swans.

Building a strong side on and off the field is the number one aim for new Natte Bealiba coach Shane Green.

The Swans became the last MCDFNLclub to name their coach for 2013, announcing that Green would take the reins last week, but the man tasked with keeping the Swans in premiership contention says the late start to the club’s pre-season could be a blessing in disguise.

"Ideally, you probably would have started about four or five weeks ago," Green said.

"But come the end of the year, we might be fresher for the late start, so it could be an advantage in a way as well."

Green comes to the Swans with a lengthy coaching CV, mainly focussed around junior and reserves football with Campbells Creek and Castlemaine, but is confident he can have the club back in premiership contention this season after injuries derailed its 2012 campaign.

"What we want to do is build depth at the club," he said.

"Obviously the ground here (at Natte) is big, so you want young guys who can run, but we want to back that up with some experience and strength."

The Swans are expected to maintain the majority of the club’s senior list, including many players from its 2011 victory, while Green expects to add a few more senior players to the list in coming weeks.

Green’s focus on developing the team off the field will also play an important part of the Swans’ pre-season.

"I want the team to develop some core values that we’ll carry throughout the season and we will play by those values," he said.

"If we’re a strong team off the field, we’ll be a strong team on the field.

"People have asked what attracted me to Natte Bealiba, and I tell them it’s the quality of the people here."

Natte Bealiba president Alan Mills said the club was pleased with its latest coaching appointment.

"We’re very impressed with Shane," Mills said.

"He brings a different approach to the club and we think he’ll add to the culture at the club.

"The club is very excited."

Green, who will be a non-playing coach, takes the top job at the Swans after 2012 coach Brent Mortlock stepped down at the end of last season.

The club will begin its pre-season training on Monday night at the Natte Yallock Recreation Reserve, beginning at 6 pm.
