COMMUNITY football team Anmatjere kept their end of the bargain to play finals football on SaturdayFOR 23 hours and about 30 minutes on the weekend, Anmatjere were making plans for this weekend's AFL Central Australia (AFLCA) finals series.
On Saturday, the fifth-placed Cowboys (with 36 premiership points) had humbled Rovers in a 94-point rout, 22.24 (156) to 9.6 (60). It was a massive win and it saw the community team displace Yuendumu (40) from fourth place on the ladder.
Trouble was, however, Yuendumu weren't about to give up that spot without a fight and their match on Sunday against club powerhouse Wests took on added significance. And the Magpies didn't disappoint, securing their place in the top four with a gutsy 14-point win, 19.10 (124) to 17.8 (110).
Ltyentye Apurte, however, can feel aggrieved at missing out on the double chance after their opponents Papunya forfeited their match.
The men from Santa Teresa, in third place on 44 points, were awarded the points and joined second-placed Wests on 48 but missed out on valuable percentage to leapfrog them and secure a double chance.
Ltyentye Apurte will now play Yuendumu in Saturday's first semi-final, the winner of which will play the loser of the second semi-final between minor premiers Pioneer and Wests in the preliminary final.
Cusack wins award as Measures denied shot at goalsSOUTH Alice Springs stalwart Shaun Cusack has won the AFLCA's leading goal-kicker award with his season haul of 75 majors.
Pioneer's Dillon Measures (68) needed eight gettable goals to claim the prize but the young forward never got the chance after Hermannsburg failed to front for their Saturday twilight match.
Cusack's Roos had a scheduled bye on the weekend, as did second-placed Stephen Brooks' (69) Federals.
