Redbacks’ Men have big win over Eagles

The Perth Redbacks’ Men’s State Basketball League team had a big 106 to 88 away-game win against the East Perth Eagles.

Redbacks’ US import Stan Okoye set the tone with a big 18 point first quarter to end as the game-high scorer with 32 and 14 rebounds while centre Dennis Tawhiti scored 18 along with 12 rebounds and three assists.

Point-guard Joel Wagner had eight assists, nine points and five rebounds, while up and coming shooting guard Marshall Nelson continued to send a message to the rest of the competition with a strong 15 from 12 shots at a field goal percentage of 58.

Despite the win the Redbacks’ men remain in sixth-place in the 14-team competition with four wins and three losses.

The Redbacks’ women’s team put in their strongest performance of the year but again were unable to sustain a four-quarter effort and went down to the Eagles 60 to 68.

The young combination let themselves down in the third quarter in scoring just two, but showed that once they can learn how to put in a consistent four-quarter effort they will be able to take the game up to any other team in the competition.

Forward Jess Jakens was the Redbacks top scorer with 18 and four rebounds.

Centre Alix Hayward continued with her season long strong form in scoring 13 and bringing down nine rebounds while 18-year-old shooting guard Jess Hughes scored 11.

The Redbacks’ women remain in 12th place in the 12-team competition with no wins and seven losses.

The next game for the Redbacks’ is on Easter Monday, 21 April at the Belmont Oasis Leisure Centre against the Wanneroo Wolves with the women’s game starting at midday and the men’s game at 2PM.
