400-Gamer Hits Winning Points

Southside Mitsubishi Redbacks’ Ryan Neill hit the winning shot in a fairytale 400th State Basketball League game last night.

The fifth placed Redbacks won the dramatic encounter against the third placed Lakeside Lightning 87 to 86.

The winning shot was made with seven seconds left after the Lightning led for the previous three quarters.

Neill was also the highest scorer for the Redbacks with 27 at a field goal percentage of 50 along with five rebounds and five assists.

Perth Wildcat Jesse Wagstaff was their next highest scorer with 26 at 57% along at with four rebounds, two steals and two blocked shots.

Point-guard Joel Wagner scored 13, all in the second half, along with eight assists and five rebounds while consistent and tough centre Daniel Maddox was their next highest scorer with 11 along with 10 rebounds, three blocked shots and two assists.

Despite the win the Redbacks’ men’s team remains in fifth place with a season record of 11 wins and eight losses.

The fourth placed Southside Mitsubishi Redbacks’ women’s team lost to the Lightning 50 to 56.

Centre Marita Payne was their top-scorer with 24 at 65% along with 12 rebounds and five blocked shots.

Power-forward Brooke Hiddlestone was their next highest scorer with 13 along with nine rebounds.

The loss sees the Redbacks’ women’s team slip to fifth place with a season record of 10 wins and seven losses.

The action continues this Friday at 8PM when the Redbacks takes on the second placed Geraldton Buccaneers at the Belmont Oasis Leisure and Aquatic Centre, while the women’s team has a bye.

The game forms part of the Drug Action Week Calendar of Events.

Entry has been set at just $2 per person.

This is followed by a game on Saturday night against the East Perth Eagles at the Morley Recreation Centre, with the women’s game starting at 6PM and the men’s game at 8PM
