Redbacks WABL Wrap - Round One

Perth Redbacks hosted the Wanneroo Wolves in the first round of the Western Australian Basketball League (WABL) games last Sunday.

There were 16 games played at the Leisurelife Recreation Centre in East Victoria Park. The Redbacks won four and lost 12 games throughout the day.

The under 12 men’s team lost 36 to 63 points. Reece Hewitt was the Redbacks’ top scorer with 14 while Luke Simonette was their next highest scorer on 12. They are currently in third place in the Northern Conference.

The score in the under 12 women’s game was seven to 50. This sees the Redbacks team in sixth conference place. Chloe Grant, Jordan Parkin and Samantha Campbell all scored two each for the Redbacks.

The under 13 men’s team had a close win 48 to 45. Promising guard Steven Pover was the Redbacks top-scorer with 29, which was the highest points-scored by any Redbacks’ player on the day. Adam Parora was the next highest scorer with six. Their team is presently in third conference place.

The under 13s women’s team lost 32 to 65. Alegra Petkovich top-scored for the Redbacks with 10 while Talethia Valentine, Emerson Lambert and Vanessa Harwood all scored six each. They are in third conference place.

The under 14 Redbacks’ women’s team lost 24 to 58. Jessica Richardson and Rebecca Sampson were their two top-scorers with four apiece. The 14’s women are presently sitting in fourth conference place.

The men’s under 14’s team lost in a tight encounter 50 to 58, which sees them in 5th conference place. Shaquille Maharaj was their top-scorer with 12, while Jeet Mann scored eight points and Jack Wagner scored seven.

The under 15 women’s team lost to 40 to 80. Promising guard Sam Tognolini was their highest scorer with a hard-fought 20, while Rachael Goodger and Lucy Noll scored seven and four respectively. They are presently in sixth conference place.

Giordano Monteleone top-scored for the under 15 men’s team with a strong 28-point effort. Alex Bevilaqua was their next highest scorer on 12. However, the team lost this tough encounter 47 to 98, which sees them in fifth conference place.

The under 16 women’s team lost 44 to 96 which finds them in sixth conference place. Lori Ashworth top-scored with 14, while Caitlin Largue scored 10 and Sophie Mackin six.

The under 16 men’s team lost 52 to 105. Last year’s league most valuable player Luke Fletcher top-scored for the Redbacks with 18 points while David Koo was their next highest scorer with 12 points. They are presently in 5th conference place.

In the closest game of the day the under 18 women’s team had a 39 to 37 win. State Basketball League contract holder Gabby O’Sullivan showed her true promise with 18 while Lori Ashworth scored 15. They are now in second conference position.

In a tight game the under 18s Division One men’s team narrowly lost 70 to 77 and are presently in fifth conference place. Jamieson Lewis had a strong game and top-scored with 14, while Darcy Smit scored 12 and Declan Everett scored 10.

The under 18 division two men’s team lost 33 to 51, which finds them in sixth conference place. Scott Samson was their top scorer on 12 points while Josh Hindle scored eight.

The under 20 men’s team lost to the Wolves 43 to 88. Guard/forward Geordie Murray top-scored for the Redbacks with 19, point-guard Sheldon Godfrey scored six and Shaun Bartlett five. They are in eighth place in the combined ladder.

The State Basketball League trio of Reece Dempster, Michael Vigor and Ashley Stevens scored 18, 15 and 11 respectively in their strong 69 to 65 win in the Development League game. This win sees them in third conference place.

The Development-League women’s team also had a strong 51 to 44 win. Frances Clarke top-scored with 15, Natasha Nicholson scored, with Alix Hayward and Monique Kickett scored nine each.. They are presently in second conference place.

The WABL action continues this Sunday 9th May against the Cockburn Cougars at the Wally Hagen Stadium, 8 Starling Street Hamilton Hill. The various game times for all age groups and categories can be located via the WABL icon on the Redbacks’ home-page.
