Southside Mitsubishi Redbacks Third in Blitz

The Southside Mitsubishi Redbacks’ men’s team came third in the State Basketball League Pre-season Blitz conducted over the long-weekend.
In a modified program the Redbacks’ men were denied the opportunity to play off in the finals despite coming top of their pool, when a late-minute change mid-way through the competition saw the removal of the originally scheduled semi-final round.
In the preliminary round the men’s team beat last year’s premiers Lakeside Lightning 62 to 42, were beaten by the Eastern Suns 46 to 52 and overcame the Bunbury Slammers 84 to 55. In the play-off between third and fourth the Redbacks defeated the Wanneroo Wolves 88 to 61, with US import Jon Meriweather top-scoring with 26 points and Wildcats development player Jarrad Prior the next highest scorer with 22 points.
In a great weekend performance which included an array of dunks and blocked shots, ‘excitement machine’ Meriweather also top-scored for the tournament with an impressive total of 80 points.
The Redbacks’ women’s team had a weekend result of two wins and two losses. In the preliminary round they defeated the Stirling Senators 56 to 31 and lost to Mandurah Magic 35 to 38 and the Eastern Suns 43 to 53. They finished in 7th place in the competition after beating the Willetton Tigers 61 to 44 points in the minor-playoff round.
The Willetton Tigers won the Blitz in the men’s competition with the Cockburn Cougars winning the women’s competition.
