Southside Mitsubishi Redbacks Win in Extra Time
30-3-2008 - By Gary Prior
The Southside Mitsubishi Redbacks women’s State Basketball League team beat last year’s grand finalists, Stirling Senators, 48 to 46 in the drama-filled match at the Belmont Oasis Recreation Centre. Scores were tied at the end of regular time but Southsides prevailed in the first period of over-time when former Perth Lynx player, Brooke Hiddlestone, successfully put away two pressure free-throws with seconds to go.
Top scorer for Southsides was centre Christine Boyd with 14 points and Hiddlestone was the next highest with 13 points. Shooting guard Kerise Del Coure was awarded the Len Vlahov Memorial Trophy for the best Southside’s player.
Southsides’ men’s team just could not overcome the influence of Senator’s big-man and former National Basketball League player Geordie Cullen, who scored 33 points, and lost 88 to 110.
The highest scorer for the Southsides was shooting guard Ryan Neill with 32 points and then point guard Joel Wagner with 20 points. Wagner, who also had 13 assists, received the Len Vlahov Memorial Trophy best player award.
The action continues this Saturday again at Belmont Oasis with the Southside Mitsubishi Southsides playing the Mandurah Magic with the women’s game starting at 6PM and the men’s game at 8PM.
