Redbacks Comeback Win

The BOQ Redbacks’ men’s State Basketball League team came back from a nine-point ½ time deficit to secure a 97 to 87 win against the Willetton Tigers.

The game was a see-saw affair in which the lead changed 15 times.

The win was secured by the Redbacks in the third term when they produced a strong defensive effort to hold the Tigers to 14 while amassing 30.

213 centimetre centre Justin Brown scored 23, brought down 17 rebounds and made four assists.

This effort saw him win the Len Vlahov Memorial Award, given to the best Redbacks’ player in the first home-game of the year.

Len Vlahov was a key person in establishing the Redbacks in 1964 and went on to become a life member.

Power-forward Michael Vigor scored 27 and had 12 rebounds and five assists.

Point-guard Joel Wagner scored 15 and had five assists and three steals while shooting guard Adam Johnston had 14 and three assists.

The Redbacks’ men have two wins and no losses and are in fourth-place in the 14-team competition.

In a tough encounter in which the lead changed ten times, the BOQ Redbacks’ women’s team lost their first game of the year against the Tigers 50 to 60.

Redbacks’ point-guard Rachel Lisch scored eight and had seven rebounds.

This effort, along with her intense defence, saw Lisch win the Len Vlahov Memorial Award in the women's game.

Centre Marita Payne was the Redbacks’ top-scorer with 19 while bringing down 10 rebounds and making three assists.

Forward Jess Jakens had seven points, three rebounds and two assists while point-guard Gabby O’Sullivan scored six.

The loss sees the Redbacks’ women in 10th place in the 12-team competition.

The action continues this Saturday with the Redbacks playing at their home venue of the Belmont Oasis Leisure and Aquatic Centre against the Wanneroo Wolves.

Tip-off for the women’s game is at 6PM and 8PM for the men’s game.
