Redbacks Dramatic Comeback

The Perth Redbacks’ men’s State Basketball League team came back from a 16-point deficit midway through the last quarter to beat the 2nd placed Wanneroo Wolves 99 to 103.

This is the Redbacks’ men’s fifth-straight win and guarantees them a top-eight finish and a resultant place in the playoffs for the third year in a row.

Australian Boomer Jesse Wagstaff led the comeback for the Redbacks’ men, ending up with a game-high 29 points along with 16 rebounds, three blocked shots, three steals and three assists.

Sydney Kings’ point-guard Joel Wagner was the Redbacks next highest scorer with 20 together with six assists and five rebounds, while centre Michael Vigor scored 16 and had five rebounds.

The Redbacks’ men have 14 wins and 11 losses and are currently in seventh place in the 14-team competition.

The Redbacks’ women’s team lost 50 to 58 in a tight encounter against the fifth-placed Wolves.

This sees them missing out of the play-offs for the first time in three-years as a result of their being two-games behind the eighth-placed Lakeside Lightning, with only one qualifying round game remaining.

Centre Marita Payne top-scored for the Redbacks’ women with 14 along with 14 rebounds while power-forward Brooke Hiddlestone had nine points and ten rebounds.

The Redbacks women have seven wins and 14 losses and are in ninth-place in the 12-team competition.

The Redbacks’ final qualifying round game of the year is against the East Perth Eagles at their home-venue of Belmont Oasis Leisure and Aquatic Centre, Alexander Road Belmont this Saturday 23 July with the women’s game starting at 6PM and the men’s game at 8PM.

Depending upon the outcome of this and other games, the Redbacks men’s team could end up anywhere between fifth and eighth place at the end of the regular season.
