Redbacks' Eclipse Suns

Southside Mitsubishi Redbacks men’s State Basketball League team last night beat Kalamunda Eastern Suns 98 to 89 at the Belmont Oasis Stadium.

This was an extremely tight encounter in which the lead changed 23 times. Shooting guard Jarrad Prior top-scored for the Redbacks with 25-points along with 10 rebounds, two assists and three steals. Forward Jesse Wagstaff was their next highest scorer with 23 points and six rebounds. US import Daniel Maddox scored 18 points, 14 rebounds and two assists while point guard Joel Wagner made 11 assists and scored 16 points. 18-year-old small forward Robert Cassir had a strong game bringing down eight rebounds and scoring six points.

The Suns forward Adrian Majstrovic was the game-high scorer with 36 points along with 18 rebounds, two assists and two steals while 214 centimetres tall Justin Brown scored 15 points along with 10 rebounds.

The Redbacks’ men’s team now has seven wins and four losses and is in fifth place in the 14-team competition.

The Redbacks’ women’s team had a strong 84 to 65 point win over the Suns. Forward Brooke Hiddlestone and centre Marita Payne were the joint game-high scorers with 22 points each. Hiddlestone also had 15 rebounds and nine assists while Payne had 10 rebounds, two steals and one assist. Shooting guard Kerise Delcoure was their next highest scorer with 15 points along with two rebounds, one assist and one steal.

Small-forward Melissa Moyle top-scored for the Suns with 19 points along with 10 rebounds with centre Carlie Boyanich their next highest scorer with 12 points, three rebounds and two assists.

The Redbacks’ women’s team is now in 5th place in the 12-team competition with a season record of six wins/four losses.

The Redbacks’ men’s team travels to Geraldton to play the Buccaneers this Saturday at 7.30PM against the Buccaneers, while the women’s team has a bye.
