REDBACKS LOSE VITAL GAME

12-7-2009 - By Redbacks'Media

The Southside Mitsubishi Redbacks’ men’s State Basketball League team lost to the Perry Lakes Hawks 121-124 points. In a nail-biting finish the Hawks took the lead with less than a second to go when point guard Joe-Alan Tupaea scored and then converted a subsequent free-throw, after the Redbacks had led for most of the game.

The top-scorer for the Redbacks was forward Chris Lynch with 32 points and 10 rebounds. Shooting guard Jarrad Prior scored 22 points along with 11 rebounds, 3 assists and 4 steals while fellow shooting guard Ryan Neil also scored 22 points along with 6 rebounds. Point guard Joel Wagner made 16 assists along with 1 steal and scored 17 points.

The top-scorer for the Hawks was National Basketball League player Tom Garlepp with 33 points along with 12 rebounds, 3 assists and 2 steals while centre Daniel Hawkins scored 31 points along with 13 rebounds.

The loss sees the Redbacks’ men slip from 8th to 10th place with a season record of 10 wins and 15 losses. For them to regain a place in the top 8 and participate in the upcoming finals they need a strong win against the Stirling Senators in this weekend’s last qualifying round game of the year.

In the absence of Australian Opals Squad member Renae Camino, who is out with a season-ending knee injury, the Redbacks’ women’s team lost to the top-placed Hawks combination 70 to 92. Top-scorer for the Redbacks was the ever-reliable forward Brooke Hiddlestone with 21 points along with 9 rebounds. Forward Frances Clarke was their next highest scorer with 11 points along with 8 rebounds.

The game-high scorer was forward Deanna Smith with 35 points along with 10 rebounds, 4 assists and 4 steals. The Redbacks remain in 4th spot with 13 wins and 8 losses.

The Redbacks are again at the Belmont Oasis Leisure Centre this Saturday for their vital games against the Stirling Senators, with the women’s game starting at 6PM and the men’s game at 8PM.
