REDBACKS WIN TWO OF THREE WABL SEMI-FINALS

:: Perth Basketball Association Inc. News Item

8-9-2008 - By Perth Redbacks

The Southside Mitsubishi Redbacks have continued their strong WABL finals form, with two of the three teams playing in last weekend’s second-round semi-finals recording strong wins.

First up was the under 16 Division 2 women’s team who held on strongly to defeat the fast-finishing Bunbury Slammers, 66 to 58. This win, along with last week’s victory against the Kalamunda Suns, is significant as the Redbacks have not previously beaten either of these sides in the qualifying round clashes earlier in the year. They will now carry this improving form into their preliminary final encounter against the tough Perry Lakes Hawks combination this Sunday, with the winner of that clash earning the right to play off in the grand-final the following week.

The under 18 Division 1 team were next up and, unfortunately, they lost to the Willetton Tigers 61 to 85. This loss means they are now out of the finals race.

The under 23 men were the last Redbacks’ team to play yesterday and they were also up against the Willetton Tigers. In what was a very tough encounter, they recorded an impressive 93 to 81 point win and will now face the Lakeside Lightning in this Sunday’s preliminary final.

The Division 1 men and women have both already progressed to the preliminary final round by virtue of their qualifying final wins in round 1 of the WABL final’s series. They will be playing the Perry Lakes Hawks and the Willetton Tigers respectively in this Sunday’s preliminary final.

Further information will be posted and circulated when advice is received from Basketball WA of the game times and court locations for our four teams playing in this Sunday’s WABL preliminary final round. All preliminary finals games will be at the Perry Lakes Stadium.
