The Southside Mitsubishi Redbacks have just missed out on upsetting the 2007 SBL Champions on their road trip to Kalgoorlie. The Redbacks rookie took Ashley Stephens for his first SBL game leaving a young bench. The Giants were also without Shamus Ballantyne & Ryan Kaminski.

The Redbacks were led by import Kenny Harris who continued his good form with 22 points & 16 rebounds. Harris averages 19 points at 58% and 13 rebounds in three games against strong opponents. Every starter had double figures and sixth man Jarrad Prior was the next highest scorer with 19 points. Captain Joel Wagner was also impressive with 16 poitsn & 12 assists. For the Giants Ryan Hulme scored 34 points and import Michael Haney had 25 points & 17 rebounds.

Both teams came out firing with the Redbacks showing their scoring woes would not continue, however they went into the break down 30-31. An even better second term saw the Redbacks limit the Giants to just 16 points to take the lead into the major break 51-47.

The third quater saw the Giants reclaim their lead, outscoring the visitors 30-25 to take a 77-76 lead at the last change. The Redbacks fought hard in the last, but life was tough with captain Joel Wagner fouling out in the fourth. With Clint Tracey and Jarrad Prior on 5 each, the Giants overran the Redbacks 100-114 to deny them their first victory in 2008.

With three first year players on the bench there are very promising signs for the Redbacks after just 4 games. While they sit on the foot of the ladder with a 0-4 record, the last two weeks have shown promising signs for the rest of the season.

The Redbacks travel to Lakeside for their only game this weekend, against the Lightning. The game is on Friday 25th April, due to ANZAC day the games tip off half an hour earlier with the Women starting at 6pm and the Men at 8pm. The Women sit sixth on their ladder after their bye with a 2-1 record. They will look to climb further ahead against the winless Lightning.
