Redbacks Men Have Upset Win Against Hawks

The Perth Redbacks’ Men’s State Basketball League belied their 13th position on the competition ladder to beat the 5th place and highly rated Perry Lakes Hawks combination 105 to 83.

In lauding the efforts of his players coach Graham Frey stated: “This win came purely from our consistent hard defence throughout the entire game without any lapses, which is something we’ve been striving to achieve for the whole year”.

The Redbacks’ forward Luke Mackay was the game high scorer with 31 points along with 7 assists, 3 steals and 13 rebounds. 19-year-old shooting guard Jarrad Prior was the next highest scorer with 20 points at an impressive field goal percentage of 62%. Point guard Joel Wagner also played strongly with 15 points along with 10 assists and 5 rebounds.

Despite the win the Redbacks’ men remain in 13th position in the 14-team competition with 3 wins and 12 losses.

The Redbacks’ women’s team lost in a tough encounter against top-placed Perry Lakes Hawks, 88 to 58. Perth Lynx player and centre Christine Boyd again top-scored for the Redbacks with 17-points. She was ably supported by fellow big-player Sophie Kelly who, in her first game since recovering from her ankle injury, scored 14 points.

However, they simply could not hold down the Hawks’ point guard and former league most valuable player, Tanya Kelly, who scored 20 points and was ably supported by forward Chelsea Boyanich with 18 points.

The loss means that the Redbacks’ women now have 8 wins and 6 losses and are in 5th place in the 12-team competition.

The action continues this Friday night with the Redbacks playing at their home venue of Belmont Oasis against the strong Stirling Senators’ combinations, with the women’s game starting at 6:30 PM and the men’s game at 8:30 PM.
