Message from our Chairman:

Outside of Hamilton City are the small towns, farming communities and schools, Taumarunui; Te Kuiti; Otorohanga; Te Awamutu; Cambridge; Morrinsville; Matamata; Putaruru; Tokoroa Whainagroa (Raglan); Ngaaruawahia and Raahui Pookeka (Huntly). For these places sports is a gathering place an expression of who you are and where you come from.

The small town, country backdrop is a big part of our New Zealand sporting fabric, in fact it is typically Kiwi.

The Waikato Country Basketball Association Inc. (WCBA) is an organisation born from this ethos.

Organised many years ago it has recently come to the fore to represent the growing movement within the greater Waikato area. Basketball in these parts is the fastest growing sport and will continue to increase with the ever enlarging profile of basketball in New Zealand. Sport NZ predicts that Basketball will be the biggest sport played in Secondary Schools in NZ by the end of 2021, far exceeding traditional sports of Rugby and Netball.

Run off the back of a team of dedicated volunteers WCBA provides opportunities for our young people to play at a local and representative level that was not formerly accorded to them due to selection restrictions from the more established Hamilton and Tauranga areas.

In fact, success has been swift and decisive for WCBA over the last four years with, very high achievement at under 13, 15, 17, 19 and 23 male and Senior Women’s on the National stage. More success is building behind this as the strategic plan plays out further in 2023.

The benefits to date have been meaningful & obvious to our army of volunteers, players, coaches, managers and families. We will continue to look for and provide opportunities for our communities to express themselves through basketball.

Expect to see more of Waikato Country, it is a “country movement” so typically Kiwi.

Our colours tell the story and is reflected in our new logo:

Blue for the sky

Green for the pastures

White for milk that flows so abundantly
