DOMINO’S Buccaneers’ workhorse, Luke Meyer has been crowned the State Basketball League’s most valuable player for 2009.

Meyer clinched the top award in a poll by SBL coaches and referees. He also racked up the most votes in the SBL All-star five team.

SBL operations manager, CJ Jackson said the 21-year-old forward took the competition by storm this year. “His impact in the competition has been felt,” he said.

“Luke’s had a fantastic season, he was the overwhelming choice by the coaching fraternity and the referees.

“His work ethic is unbelievable, he keeps himself in great shape and he has a tremendous knack of getting to the basket to score.”

Jackson’s comments were echoed by Buccs’ coach Ray Evans.

“He definitely showed throughout the year that he was the toughest player, he was up there with the best and he thoroughly deserves it,” said Evans.

Meyer topped the SBL points scoring standings with teammate and fellow countryman Michael LeBlanc on 803. He was named in the SBL Allstar five along with Goldfield Giants’ Shamus Ballantyne, Adrian Majstrovich of Kalamunda Eastern Suns and Lakeside Lightning’s Jarrad Prue and Luke Payne.

Evans said Meyer was the catalyst in his team and he is keen for the small forward to return next year.

“He filled so many gaps in our team and made everyone around him so much better, he is a complete team player.”

Evans also confirmed he will take the reins of the Buccs for next year’s campaign.
