Friday Night Review

The Southside Mitsubishi Redbacks Women won their battle with the Joondalup City Wolves after being down by 3 points at half time. The Redbacks came out in the third quarter led by Jacinta Bourne who scored ten of their 17 points for the quarter to give her team a 5 point lead at the last break. The Wolves did not have the answers for Bourne & Hiddlestone in the end as the Redbacks run out with the match 69-61 to move to a 4-2 record. Bourne led the Redbacks with 24 points at 77% (67% from outside) and 7 rebounds. Brooke Hiddlestone continued her great form with 16 points and a massive 16 rebounds (14 defensive). Danielle Lipscombe led the Wolves with 17 points, supporting her was Meghan D’arcy and Whitney Perret with 10 points each.

Lakeside won their second straight game against the Senators who remain winless at the foot of the ladder. The match was close in the first half with the Lightning leading by four points at quarter time and two at the half. The Lightning outscored the Senators 39-28 in the second half to take control and win 74-61. Natalie Young was again impressive for the Lightning with 20 points and 9 rebounds, while Courtney Byrnes was also strong with 14 points. Lynx player Dannielle Devenny led the Senators with a strong 20 points and 12 rebounds. Veteran Alicia Rinaldi was also solid with 16 points.

The Perry Lakes Hawks started their double header weekend in solid style with a 64-53 win over the 0-5 East Perth Eagles. The Hawks took control early with a 37-22 first half however the Eagles were not yet done with. They stepped up to win the next half 31-27 however the Hawks were far too strong still. Glenn Ellis managed to spread the minutes evenly ahead of his game against the Redbacks tonight with no one playing more than 24 minutes. The Hawks spread their scoring evenly too, Tegan Walker and Renee Wharekura both had 11 points each with Wharekura pulling in 10 rebounds too. Elizabeth Zezan led the way offensively for the Eagles with 11 points while import Kelsey Maffin was strong with 10 points and 7 rebounds. Deanna Smith will again be missing for the Hawks clash with the Redbacks while she is away at the Australian Opals training camp.

In the Men’s competition the Titan Interactive Wolves travelled to Belmont and took out their clash with the Redbacks 96-89 in what was a close match all game. The Wolves set the pace early leading at half time 50-43, the Redbacks shortened the lead to 5 points at the last change. However the closest the Redbacks could get in the fourth quarter was three points as the Wolves held on to grab the win. Damian Matacz was again the stand out for the Wolves, just short of a triple-double, with 24 points, 13 rebounds and 8 assists. Doug Gates and Jeff Dowdell also provided solid support with 14 and 12 points respectively while Dowdell added 7 rebounds to his haul.

The Stirling Senators travelled to Lakeside with both teams coming off a loss in week 3. The Lightning jumped out of the blocks leading 37-20 after the first 12 minutes. The Senators fought back however with a 33-25 quarter to shorten the Lightning’s lead to 9 at the main break. Lakeside outscored the Senators by 13 points in the second half however, winning the game 111-89. Luke Payne was again strong for the Lightning with 30 points, 4 rebounds and 5 assists. Local Ryan Sofoulis continued his great form with 27 points at 62% from the field and 71% from outside.  Jason Faulkner was also good with 17 points and 8 rebounds. Seb Salinas continued his strong season with 24 points, however he lacked strong support. Import Ed Morris put in 14 points and 6 rebounds while Chris Dodd had 11 points and 10 rebounds.

The Australian Central Eagles lost their second straight match, going down 96-86 to the Perry Lakes Hawks. Wildcat Stephen Weigh was a standout for the Eagles with 42 points and 11 rebounds, shooting a strong 54% from the floor and 60% from outside the three point arc. However Ben Thompson was the only other player to hit double figures with his 11 points. Wildcat Tom Garlepp led the way for the Hawks with 27 points and 13 rebounds while Joe-Alan Tupaea had 24 points, 9 rebounds and 4 assists. Martin Vahala was also solid with his 18 point, 6 rebound effort. The Hawks managed to go to the line 52 times (40/52) to the Eagles 26 (19/26) which proved to be too big a deficit for the Eagles to overcome.

There are currently no statistics available from the Cockburn games however in the ladies the Flames won 72-59 to remain undefeated and in second spot on the ladder. In the Men the Cougars remain on top of the ladder with their 120-84 win over the Flames who dropped to a 1-3 record.
