Week 11 Saturday night SBL wrap

THE Cougars, Wolves, Eagles, Senators and Flames all recorded emphatic Men's SBL victories on Saturday night while the Mandurah, Stirling and Rockingham Women all prevailed as part of Week 11 action.

The three Women's matches on Saturday night saw the Print Sync South West Slammers narrowly miss their first win of 2016, with the Bethanie Stirling Senators prevailing 89-85.

The Orange Autos Rockingham Flames also beat the Perry Lakes Hawks 71-49 and the Mandurah Magic defeated the Schweigen Home Appliances East Perth Eagles.

It was then a big night of Men's action and all five winners did so emphatically winning by an average of over 30 points.

The Lapa Brazilian BBQ Restaurant Cockburn Cougars travelled to Kalgoorlie and came away with a 113-91 win over the Silver Lake Resources Goldfields Giants. The Merriwa Tavern & Bistro City of Joondalup also beat the S&K Electrical Contracting Geraldton Buccaneers 121-88.

The Vorian Agency East Perth Eagles bounced back from losing on Friday to beat the Mandurah Magic 106-70 while the Bethanie Stirling Senators defeated the Print Sync South West Slammers 130-88 and the Nags Head Tavern Rockingham Flames beat the Perry Lakes Hawks 101-81.

The Women's action began with the Magic continuing their resurgence with the return of Casey Mihovilovich, beating the Eagles by 25 points at Morley Sport and Recreation Centre.

The win improves Mandurah to 5-7 on the season while East Perth slips to 1-11 having also lost to the Willetton Tigers by 24 points on Friday.

The Eagles were able to stick with the Magic in the first half, but Mandurah pulled away with 22 points to 11 in the third quarter, and 24 to 10 in the fourth to win by 25 points.

The Magic shot better at 45 per cent from the field opposed to 35 per cent from the Eagles who only got off 56 attempts. Mandurah dominated the glass with 40 rebounds to 24 and also forced East Perth into 21 turnovers scoring 27 points off those. The Magic also won the battle in the paint 44 points to 24.

Adijat Adams top-scored for the Magic with 24 points and 11 rebounds with Emma Klasztorny contributing 19 points and five boards, Annette Davis 19 points and six rebounds, and Mihovilovich seven points, five boards, four assists, two steals and two blocked shots.

Jodie Milligan finished with 13 points and seven rebounds for the Eagles with Haylee DeSousa contributing 13 points and four boards.

The Slammers once again came so close to their first win of the Women's SBL season taking over the game in third quarter at Warwick Stadium. But Stirling finished with 23 points to 15 in the fourth quarter to overrun South West win and win by four points.

It was an important win for the Senators to improve to 5-8 and stay in the playoff hunt while it was the Slammers' 11th loss to open 2016.

Amber Land made a massive contribution for the Senators off the bench finishing with 25 points, 17 rebounds, five assists and three steals shooting 8-of-16 from the field and 9-of-12 from the free-throw line.

Lyndal Gardner also had a strong night with 23 points and seven rebounds on hitting 5-of-10 from three-point range.

Kara van Dyke also had 18 points for Stirling and Taylor Bestry 10 points, six rebounds and three assists.

Courtney Bayliss ended up with 21 points and 10 rebounds for the Slammers with Georgia Denehey continuing her emergence with another 18 points and five boards.

Dena English contributed 18 points, seven assists, five rebounds and two steals for South West with Brittany Gliddon scoring nine points, Raya Thompson eight and Rebecca Preston seven.

It was then a battle of third against fourth at Mike Barnett Sports Complex with the defending champion Flames prevailing over the Hawks by 22 points to improve to 11-2 on the season. Perry Lakes slip to 7-5 with a third straight defeat.

Rockingham got off to a fast start with 26 points to 17 in the first period and were never headed cruising to the 22-point win despite both teams only combining for 19 fourth quarter points.

The Flames had a decent shooting night going 28-of-64 from the floor at 43 per cent and 9-of-24 at 37 per cent from long range. But the Hawks couldn’t buy a shot ending up going 19-of-73 from the field at 26 per cent and 3-of-19 at 15 per cent from downtown.

Sami Whitcomb once again top-scored for the flames with 26 points, seven assists, five rebounds and five steals on an efficient 10-of-14 shooting from the field and 4-of-6 from three-point range. She did also have 10 of her team's 23 turnovers.

Ashlee Sidebottom contributed 15 points for Rockingham, Jacinta Bourne 13 points, eight boards, five steals and three assists, and Lizel Buckley seven points, 11 rebounds and five assists.

Lauren Jeffers top-scored for the Hawks with 16 points, four rebounds, four assists and three steals with Kate Anthony adding 13 points, three boards and three steals.

And in the Men's action, the Cougars made the trip to Niels Hansen Basketball Stadium and handed the Giants a fifth successive defeat to the tune of 21 points.

The win keeps Cockburn strong in second position at 11-3 while Goldfields remains outside a playoff position at 6-9.

The Cougars got on top through forcing the Giants into 18 turnovers and scoring 28 points from those while also winning through a sheer volume of shots, taking 100 (making 45) compared to 85 (34) from the Giants.

Gavin Field stepped up to top-score for Cockburn with 24 points and seven rebounds shooting 8-of-17 from the field and 4-of-8 from three-point range.

Najee Lane contributed 17 points, 10 rebounds and three steals for the Cougars, Daniel Thomas 12 points and five assists, Marcus Goode 11 points and 14 rebounds, Sheldon McIntyre 10 points, seven boards, five assists, two steals and two blocked shots, and Travis Hayto 10 points and two assists.

Jacob Holmen did all he could for the Giants finishing with 25 points and 14 rebounds with Kenny Manigault adding 23 points, 12 assists, eight rebounds and four steals.

Russell Hurst started for Goldfields and finished with 12 points and nine rebounds.

The Wolves and Buccs loomed as one of the games of the season at Joondalup Basketball Stadium, but the defending champions would have none of it with the Wolfpack winning by 33 points after setting it up with 39 points to 19 in the first period.

It was a strong night all-round by the Wolves shooting 42-of-83 from the field and 17-of-35 from three-point territory while outrebounding the Buccs by 11 and forcing them into 23 turnovers.

The win improves the Wolves to an 11-2 record and was on the back of 28 points from Greg Hire who shot 9-of-18 from the floor, 3-of-5 from three and 7-of-7 from the line.

Rob Huntington added 18 points and 10 rebounds for Joondalup also hitting 3-of-5 from downtown.

Kevin Davis contributed 15 points, 11 rebounds, three assists and three blocked shots for the Wolves, Rhys Smyth 14 points, Sean Easther 14 points and Reece Maxwell 10 points.

The Buccaneers were missing Matthew Adekponya who has been named to the Team of the Week four times this season. Maurice Barrow top-scored with 20 points to go with six rebounds, four assists and two steals.

Aaron Ralph added 16 points for the Buccs, Charles Thurkle 14, Carter Cook 14 and Isaac Smith 10 to go with five rebounds and two steals.

The Eagles bounced back from their loss to the Tigers on Friday night by winning emphatically by 36 over the Magic at home on Saturday. The win improves East Perth to 5-9 with Mandurah slipping to 4-11.

It was a dominant performance by the Eagles including 57 rebounds to 39.

Sunday Dech made his mark in his first weekend with the Eagles this season top-scoring off the bench with 22 points, nine rebounds and two steals on shooting 8-of-11 from the floor and 3-of-4 from beyond the arc.

Rhys Vague also contributed 20 points and eight rebounds for the Eagles, Thomas Korf 18 points and five boards, and Drew Williamson, Joe-Alan Tupaea and Nikola Donlagic all eight points apiece. Tom Jervis finished with four points, 14 rebounds and four assists.

Ben Smith top-scored for the Magic with 21 points and six rebounds with Trevor Setty contributing 14 points and five boards.

The Senators found some dominant and imposing form on Saturday night as well handing the Slammers a 42-point thumping at Warwick Stadium.

The win improves Stirling to a 10-6 record and to be solid in sixth position with a good gap back to the rest while South West slips to 4-9 with the sixth straight defeat.

The Senators lit it up all night shooting 51-of-91 from the field at 56 per cent and 15-of-35 from three-point range at 42 per cent. They also won the rebound count 54 to 35 and forced the Slammers into 22 turnovers.

Jayden Coburn finished up top-scoring for the Senators with 31 points, five rebounds and three steals hitting 12-of-17 from the field and 5-of-8 from long range.

Cody Ellis added 28 points, 11 rebounds, five assists and two blocked shots nailing 10-of-14 from the floor and 5-of-8 from downtown.

AJ Majstrovich also hit 3-of-4 threes for 21 points, eight rebounds and four assists with Ryan Woodbury adding 12 points and seven boards, Austin Bruton 10 points and three assists, and Kyle Lindbergh nine points and six rebounds.

Royal Crouch led the way for the Slammers with 31 points and eight rebounds with Tre Nichols contributing 13 points, five rebounds, three assists and two steals.

Clive Weeden also had 12 points, six rebounds and three assists for South West, and Travis Durnin 10 points and five boards.

The Flames also won a fourth straight match beating the Hawks by 20 points at home on Saturday night set up by a dominant first half of 52 points to 30.

Cooper Land top-scored for Rockingham with 23 points to go with 10 rebounds, eight assists and three steals.

Chudier Pal added 20 points, 12 boards and two blocked shots for the Flames with Taylor Land contributing 15 points, five rebounds, four assists and four steals, and Ryan Godfrey 15 points, five boards and four assists.

Brian Carlwell battled manfully for the Hawks to finish with 26 points, 23 rebounds, three blocked shots and two assists.

Ben Purser also had 19 points and five assists for Perry Lakes and Matthew Sellers 19 points and 12 rebounds.
