Week 3 Saturday night SBL wrap

THE Geraldton Buccaneers scored a big win over defending Men's SBL Champions the Joondalup Wolves on Saturday night with the Goldfields Giants winning a thriller and the East Perth Eagles got on the board while the Women's defending Champs were imposing.

The Rockingham Flames have won the last two Women's titles and had a thumping 107-53 win over the Cockburn Cougars on Saturday night with the Kalamunda Eastern Suns beating the East Perth Eagles 76-64 and the Mandurah Magic defeating the Stirling Senators 79-59.

It was a massive night of men's action starting with the Geraldton Buccaneers beating the Joondalup Wolves 101-96 and the Goldfields Giants defeating the Willetton Tigers 100-99.

The Stirling Senators won their second game in 24 hours beating the Mandurah Magic 101-92 while the East Perth Eagles downed the Kalamunda Eastern Suns 115-102 and the Cockburn Cougars defeated the Rockingham Flames 98-84.

The women's Saturday night action began with the Eastern Suns opening their account for 2016 with a 12-point win over the Eagles at Morley Sport and Recreation Centre.

Stacy Barr was the star for the Suns in the win with 29 points and five rebounds hitting 10-of-20 from the field, and 4-of-9 from deep.

Sarah-Jane MacMahon contributed 17 points and five rebounds for Kalamunda with Jorjah Smith adding 12 points and Sabrina Jeridore pulled in eight rebounds.

Jodee Sontay was the only East Perth player to score in double-figures with 11 points and four rebounds with Kelsey DeWitt adding nine points, Elainah Coffin nine and Nicole Jorre St Jorre nine.

The Magic also scored their opening win of 2016 on Saturday night with a 20-point victory over the Senators at Warwick Stadium.

Mandurah opened up an eight-point advantage by quarter-time and cruised to the win despite still coughing up 24 turnovers.

They did outrebound the Senators by 14 to make up for that and it was the return of Casey Mihovilovich that made the difference from their season-opening loss to the Perry Lakes Hawks.

She finished the night with 23 points, four rebounds, four assists and three steals for the Magic with Adijat Adams contributing 18 points and 14 boards, and Emma Klasztorny 13 points, three rebounds and three assists.

Amber Land top-scored for the Senators with 16 points, six rebounds, four blocked shots and two steals. Taylor Bestry added 10 points and Chelsea Armstrong seven to go with three rebounds and Tegan Walker seven points, five boards and three assists.

The Flames then recorded a third successive victory following their opening round loss to the Willetton Tigers in a Grand Final rematch. Rockingham beat Cockburn by 54 points at Mike Barnett Sports Complex.

Rockingham was in control leading 50-27 at half-time and went on with the job outscoring Cockburn in the second 57 to 26 to romp to the big win.

Sami Whitcomb had another unstoppable performance for the Flames with 34 points, 10 rebounds, five assists and five steals on the back of shooting 9-of-18 from the field, 5-of-10 from three-point land and 11-of-13 from the charity stripe.

Darcee Garbin had a big night off the bench with 24 points and 15 rebounds as well with Ashlee Sidebottom contributing 14 points, seven boards and three assists, and Tarsha Fletcher 12 points, three rebounds and three assists.

It was a tough night for the Cougars but Cherridy Thornton fought hard for 21 points, 10 rebounds and two steals. But she did shoot just 7-of-27 from the field.

It was a big night in the men's competition with the Buccaneers upsetting the defending champion Wolves by five points at Active West Stadium.

The win sees the Buccaneers improve to 3-1 on the season and the loss for the Wolfpack is their first since Game 2 of their quarter-final series last year to the Perry Lakes Hawks.

The Buccs did well to shoot 89 per cent from the free-throw line compared to 59 per cent from the Wolves while winning the rebound battle narrowly and doing well taking care of the ball with just the 10 turnovers to score the win over the defending champions.

Carter Cook top-scored for the Buccaneers with 28 points and six rebounds while Matthew Adekponya added 26 points, 14 boards and six assists.

Maurice Barrow only shot 6-of-19 from the field for the Buccs but didn’t miss any of his nine free-throw attempts and ended the night with 21 points and seven rebounds while Aaron Ralph contributed 13 points and eight boards off the bench.

Kevin Davis top-scored for the Wolfpack with 23 points to go with 16 rebounds while Rob Huntington had 19 points and six boards, Seb Salinas 14 points, seven rebounds and four assists, Trian Iliadis 13 points and Ben Ironmonger 11 to go with six boards, four assists and three steals.

It was another thriller at Niels Hansen Basketball Stadium with the home team prevailing as well as the Giants made it three straight beating the Tigers by a point.

Goldfields had to come from behind for the victory as well but found something at home in the fourth quarter to get over the line by the solitary point.

Kenny Manigault was the star of the night for the Giants with 38 points, 11 rebounds, five assists and four steals while shooting 14-of-27.

Fellow import Jacob Holmen added 18 points and 16 rebounds with Daniel Goodluck adding 11 points and Ezra Nikora nine to go with five assists.

Jay Bowie put up 29 points, 13 rebounds and five assists for the Tigers with Kyle Armour adding 23 points, four boards and four assists.

Damien Scott also had 19 points, six rebounds and four assists, and Nic Cody 10 points and eight boards.

The Senators hosted the Magic at Warwick Stadium for their second win of the weekend to improve 2-2 with the nine-point victory while Mandurah slipped to 1-2.

Stirling scored the win despite being outrebounded by 19 by Mandurah but the Senators did shoot well at 48 per cent and took care of the ball with just 13 turnovers for the night.

Cody Ellis backed up his huge night on Friday against Cockburn with another 23 points and eight rebounds for the Senators with Austin Bruton adding 19 points, Jayden Coburn 13 and Kyle Lindbergh 12 (seven assists).

Trevor Setty did all he could for the Magic with 41 points, 18 rebounds, four assists and three steals shooting 14-of-28.

Taylor Mullenax also contributed 20 points and 12 boards, Ben Smith 16 points and eight rebounds and Tom Remmerswaal eight points to go with six boards.

It was the battle of the winless teams remaining in the competition on Saturday night and now the Eastern Suns are the last one left yet to win in 2016.

East Perth came from behind at Morley Sport and Recreation Centre to beat Kalamunda by 13 points after three straight losses to open the new season.

It was the Suns who appeared on track for their first win of the season leading comfortably during the third period, but the Eagles then turned it on in the final 18 minutes and had 28 points to 14 in the fourth quarter to end up winning by 13.

It was East Perth's shooting that got them over the line going 36-of-70 from the field at 51 per cent and 13-of-26 from three-point range at 50 per cent. The Suns could only manage 39 per cent from the field on 98 attempts and 15-of-49 from deep at 30 per cent.

Thomas Korf had the best game of his first SBL season with 39 points and five rebounds shooting 13-of-25 from the field and 6-of-13 from deep in the absence of Drew Williamson.

Rhys Vague stepped up for East Perth as well with 33 points, 16 rebounds, six assists, three blocks and two steals while not missing a single shot. He made 9-of-9 from the field, 4-of-4 from three and 11-of-11 at the line.

Brendan Dinardo contributed 12 points, four rebounds and four assists for the Eagles while playing-coach Joe-Alan Tupaea added 10 points, 11 boards, five assists and two steals.

Jacopo Marsili top-scored off the bench for the Eastern Suns with 15 points and seven rebounds with Travis McIlroy adding 13 points, Brandon McGill 13, Billy Grey 11 and Jarrad Prior 10.

The Cougars suffered their first loss of the season on Friday night at the hands of the Stirling Senators, but bounced back on Saturday with a 14-point victory over the Flames at Mike Barnett Sports Complex.

Gavin Field had a big night for the Cougars with 28 points, eight rebounds and four assists on the back of shooting 9-of-14 from the field and 4-of-6 from three-point range.

But Cockburn has plenty of depth with Najee Lane contributing 19 points and seven rebounds and Marcus Goode 16 points and eight boards.

Rhett Della also did well for nine points, four rebounds, two assists and two steals while Jaarod Holmes contributed eight points, Julian Pesava five along with seven rebounds, and Dan Thomas four to go with six boards and four assists.

Cooper Land top-scored for the Flames with 21 points and six rebounds with Ryan Godfrey adding 14 points, Chudier Pal 13 (seven rebounds), Jarryd Griffin 12 (nine boards) and Nebojsha Franich 10 (nine rebounds).
