Flames stay unbeaten, Lightning keep in touch (Week 10 Women's SBL Wrap)

THE Rockingham Flames remained unbeaten, the Perth Redbacks winless and the Mandurah Magic responded to a loss on Friday with a win on Saturday in women's Week 10 SBL action.

There were three women's SBL matches on Friday night and another four on Saturday with the Magic splitting their two matches, the Cougars, Lightning, Wolves, Slammers, Senators and Flames winning their only match and the Redbacks and Hawks losing twice.

Three clubs expected to contend for the 2014 championship all flexed their muscles with impressive victories on Friday night.

The Soprano Lady Cougars beat the Perth Redbacks 71-53 at Belmont Oasis with the Lakeside Lightning also defeating the Mandurah Magic 86-61 at Lakeside Recreation Centre and the Joondalup Wolves downing the Perry Lakes Hawks 83-63 at the WA Basketball Centre.

There were then four women's SBL matches to close out Week 10 on Saturday night.

The Collie Crane Hire South West Slammers beat the Schweigen East Perth Eagles 60-47 at Eaton Recreation Centre and the Mandurah Magic downed the Perry Lakes Hawks 87-67 at Mandurah Aquatic and Recreation Centre.

The Stirling Senators also defeated the Willetton Tigers 64-55 at Willetton Basketball Stadium and the Orange Autos Rockingham Flames won over the Perth Redbacks 78-61 at Mike Barnett Sports Complex.

The results of the weekend means that the Orange Autos Rockingham Flames remain unbeaten and at the top of the women's standings with a 12-0 record.

The Lakeside Lightning (9-2) now sit in second having won three straight followed by the Mandurah Magic (9-3), Joondalup Wolves (7-3), Stirling Senators (5-3), Soprano Lady Cougars (6-4), Kalamunda Eastern Suns (5-6) and the Perry Lakes Hawks (4-6).

Just outside the top-eight are the Collie Crane Hire South West Slammers (3-7), the Willetton Tigers (3-8), the Schweigen East Perth Eagles (2-10) and Perth Redbacks (0-13).

Once again, there was a host of outstanding individual performances across the weekend as well.

On Friday night, Emma Pass led the way for the Cougars with 21 points and six rebounds on the back of shooting 8-of-15 from the field.

Marita Payne also contributed 18 points, 12 rebounds and four blocked shots in her first appearance for Cockburn against her former team Perth.

Jess Jakens worked hard for the Redbacks with 20 points, six rebounds and three steals but she had no teammate who managed to score more than Gabby O'Sullivan's eight points.

Courtney Byrnes led the way for the Lightning with 20 points, five rebounds and five assists with Kari Pickens also contributing 15 points and 12 boards despite shooting just 5-of-19 from the floor.

Ashleigh Grant also added 13 points, Emily Fielding 12 and Krystal Stoneking 10 to go with seven rebounds and three assists.

Despite the loss, Hailey Dunham still put up 20 points, six rebounds, four blocked shots, three assists and two steals for the Magic.

Shani Amos had a strong game for the Lady Wolfpack with 15 points, 10 rebounds and five assists on the back of shooting 7-of-14 from the field.

Megan Lee also contributed 15 points for the Wolves with Ellyce Ironmonger adding 12 points and seven rebounds, and Amanda Frontino 11 points.

Lucy Stewart top-scored for Perry Lakes with 17 points with Jessie Clayton adding 10.

Then on Saturday night, Amy Patton led the way for the Slammers with 31 points, 14 rebounds and six steals in an outstanding performance while shooting 12-of-25 from the field, and 5-of-13 from downtown.

Stephanie Jones ended up with 12 points and nine rebounds for the Eagles with Brienna Nolan also adding 12 points on the back of shooting 5-of-8 from the field.

Gemma Thomas led the way for the Magic with 20 points, eight rebounds and two assists while shooting 7-of-13 from the floor with Hailey Dunham also adding 20 points and seven boards.

Emma Klasztorny contributed 16 points with Casey Mihovilovich finishing with 14 points, 12 rebounds and 10 assists as she recorded an impressive triple-double for the Magic.

Anna Kovats top-scored for the Hawks with 13 points, three rebounds and three assists with Rosie Tobin finishing with 12 points and nine boards, and Sarah Donovan 10 points and nine rebounds.

Tegan Walker top-scored for the Senators with 15 points and five rebounds with Taylor Wild contributing 14 points and eight boards, Taylor Bestry 14 points and Amber Land 13 to go with 10 rebounds.

Antonia Edmondson top-scored for the Tigers with 15 points, seven rebounds, four assists, three steals and two blocked shots with Mikayla Pirini adding 11 points, five boards and three assists, and Lisa Wallbutton 10 points and a massive 19 rebounds.

Samantha Whitcomb had another huge night for the Flames with 29 points, four rebounds and three assists on the back of shooting 11-of-17 from the field and 5-of-10 from long range.

Darcee Garbin also contributed 15 points and six boards with Kaye Tucker adding 12 points, four boards, three assists and two steals for the Flames.

Gabby O'Sullivan top-scored off the bench for the Redbacks with 19 points, five rebounds and three assists with Alix Hayward adding 14 points and seven boards, and Jess Jakens 10 points and seven rebounds.
