Buccaneers close gap on Flames with win (Week 8 Saturday night SBL wrap)

COCKBURN'S men and women both lost to Joondalup just 24 hours after a double-victory over Lakeside while Geraldton beat Rockingham in men's action to close the gap on top of the standings after Saturday night's SBL action.

There were four women's SBL matches on Saturday night with the Joondalup Wolves beating the Cockburn Cougars 67-56 at Joondalup Basketball Stadium and the Stirling Senators thrashing the Perry Lakes Hawks 77-54 at Warwick Leisure Centre.

The Mandurah Magic thumped the Willetton Tigers 90-67 at Willetton Basketball Stadium and the Kalamunda Eastern Suns beat the Collie Crane Hire South West Slammers 89-75 at Ray Owen Sports Centre.

The Cougars couldn’t back up their impressive win over the Lakeside Lightning on Friday night going down to the defending champion Wolves by 11 points on Saturday.

The win for Joondalup sees the Wolfpack improve to a 6-2 record on the season to be in fourth position while Cockburn slips to 5-3 in fifth.

Chelsea Burns led the way for Joondalup with 17 points and nine rebounds with Amanda Frontino adding 13 points and Megan Lee 10. Shani Amos also finished with six points, 11 rebounds and four assists.

Marita Payne top-scored for the Cougars with 15 points and 10 rebounds with Sam Richards contributing 14 points and Emma Pass 13 to go with eight rebounds.

Perry Lakes had been in good form of late heading into Saturday's clash with Stirling, but the Senators cruised to the 23-point win to consolidate a spot inside the top-eight.

The win improves Stirling to a 3-3 record on the season while the loss takes Perry Lakes to 4-4.

Taylor Wild was the star of the night for Stirling finishing with 23 points on the back of nailing 7-of-9 from three-point territory.

Taylor Bestry also scored 14 points for the Senators with Tegan Walker adding 11 and Amber Land pulled in 10 rebounds and blocked three shots.

Sarah Donovan was the only Perry Lakes player to score in double-figures with 10 points while Megan McKay had 12 rebounds and Kate Anthony 10.

Mandurah continued its strong start to the women's SBL season while keeping last year's minor premiers Willetton to a disastrous opening to 2014.

The Magic thumped the Tigers by 23 points away from home on Saturday with Mandurah now sitting in second position in the standings with an impressive 7-2 record while Willetton sits in 10th spot with just two wins from eight matches.

Hailey Dunham was the star of the show for Mandurah finishing with 30 points, nine rebounds, four steals and three assists on the back of shooting 10-of-14 from the field and 10-of-12 from the foul line.

Casey Mihovilovich added 17 points, seven steals, six rebounds and five assists for the Magic while Jorjah Smith scored 12 points.

Melissa Marsh top-scored for Willetton with 16 points with Lisa Wallbutton adding 11 points, eight rebounds, three blocked shots and three assists.

Last year's grand finalists Kalamunda scored a strong 14-point win over the 2012 champions South West with the Eastern Suns now sitting on a 4-6 record in eighth spot and the Slammers slipped 2-5 in ninth.

Jennie Rintala had a massive game for the Eastern Suns finishing with 24 points and 18 rebounds.

Alison Schwagmeyer also contributed 21 points and seven rebounds for the Suns on the back of shooting 8-of-15 from the field and 2-of-4 from downtown.

Chelsea Armstrong added 16 points, six rebounds and four assists as well with Jessie Edwards scoring 10 points to go with nine boards and four blocked shots.

Brittany Gliddon top-scored for the Slammers with 22 points and nine rebounds with Amy Patton contributing 17 points and nine boards. Bianca Donovan also scored 11 points and Lauren Jeffers 10.

There were six massive men's matches on Saturday night with the Joondalup Wolves beating the Cockburn Cougars 98-74, the Perry Lakes Hawks thrashing the Stirling Senators 103-69, the Willetton Tigers beat the Mandurah Magic 139-123 and the Collie Crane Hire South West Slammers defeated the Kalamunda Eastern Suns 93-83.

The Sun City Plumbing Geraldton Buccaneers also beat the Orange Autos Rockingham Flames 112-95 at Active West Stadium while the Vorian Agency East Perth Eagles downed the Silver Lakes Resources Goldfields Giants 95-71 at Neils Hansen Basketball Stadium.

The Flames remain on top of the standings with a 9-3 record despite the loss to the Buccaneers but Geraldton improved to 8-3 to be closing the gap from second position.

Odartey Blankson put in a terrific performance for the Buccaneers with 26 points and 13 rebounds while shooting 11-of-16 from the field and 2-of-3 from long range.

Bennie Lewis shook off a minor injury from last week to score 19 points and play 41 minutes with Carter Cook finishing with 18 points, Matt Wundenberg 11 (16 rebounds) and Shamus Ballantyne 10.

Cooper Land did all he could for the Flames with 32 points and 10 rebounds with Andrew Bowman contributing 16 points, Tom Remmerswaal 15 and Taylor Land 11 to go with six rebounds and five assists.

The Eagles got back on the winner's list with the 24-point win in Kalgoorlie over Goldfields with East Perth improving to a 4-8 record while the Giants are struggling on 2-8.

Sunday Dech starred for East Perth with 26 points and 10 rebounds despite shooting just 8-of-23 from the field. He did nail 5-of-10 from downtown though.

Nikola Donlagic also added 18 points and six rebounds for the Eagles with Kyle Armour contributing 17 points, 10 assists, seven rebounds and five steals.

Lordan Franich tried hard for the Giants with 25 points, 15 rebounds and four steals with Duran Blue adding 17 points and seven assists, and Tommy Hannon 16 points and nine boards.

Cockburn recorded an impressive win on Friday night over the defending champion Lakeside Lightning, but the Cougars couldn’t back up against last year's runner's-up on Saturday with the Wolves cruising to a 24-point victory.

The win improves Joondalup to a 6-3 record on the season to sit in third position while Cockburn continues to struggle in 12th spot on 3-7.

Seb Salinas again starred for the Wolves with 32 points, 10 rebounds and four assists while shooting 12-of-22 from the field and 3-of-4 from three-point territory.

Rob Huntington also scored 18 points to go with seven rebounds for Joondalup with Sean Easther adding 15 points and Brendan Tucek 12.

Gavin Field again top-scored for the Cougars with 21 points to go with 13 rebounds with Damien Scott adding 20 points and seven rebounds.

Stirling had been building some impressive form in recent weeks, but were blown away by Perry Lakes on Saturday with the Hawks cruising to a massive 34-point win.

The win improves the Hawks to a 5-4 record on the season while the Senators slip to 4-4 and fall outside of the top-eight in the process.

Corey Easley top-scored for Perry Lakes with 23 points, 14 rebounds and five assists with Ben Purser adding 15 points, Josh Garlepp 15, Justin Cecil 12, Rob Cassir 10 and Rory Pekin 10.

Jordan Wild did all he could for the Senators with 30 points and 16 rebounds but was the only player to reach double-figures in any category.

It was an incredibly high-scoring affair between Mandurah and Willetton at Willetton Basketball Stadium, but it was the home team Tigers who ended up prevailing by 16 points in a game that featured 262 points.

The win improves the Tigers to a 4-5 record to still be down in 10th position while the Magic slip to 6-3 in fourth spot.

Willetton's imports Quinn McDowell and John Dickson once again had massive nights with Quinn McDowell finishing with 43 points, 11 rebounds and seven assists while shooting 14-of-28 from the field, 4-of-9 from beyond the arc and 11-of-13 from the charity stripe.

Dickson also finished with 41 points, 11 rebounds, five assists, three blocked shots and two steals while shooting 17-of-29 from the floor, 2-of-5 from downtown and 5-of-6 from the free-throw line.

Mitchell Clarke also added 22 points and eight rebounds for Willetton with Jacob Reed scoring 17 points and Jake Burston 10.

Taylor Mullenax top-scored for the Magic with 28 points, nine rebounds, five assists, three blocks and two steals with Paul Hafford also scoring 27 points to go with seven assists even though he hit just 2-of-13 from three-point range.

Brendan Maddalena added 20 points while Rhett Della Maddalena also scored 17 points for the Magic with Trent Gerovich adding 15 points and Ben Smith 12.

Meanwhile the Slammers improved to a 5-5 record in eighth spot with a 10-point win on the road against the bottom-placed Eastern Suns.

Playing-coach Ty Harrelson led the way for the Slammers with 28 points, seven rebounds and six assists while shooting 11-of-20 from the field and 3-of-6 from three-point range.

Jonathan Todd Hendley added 24 points and 10 rebounds for South West with Clive Weeden also contributing 21 points and 10 boards.

Adhar Mayen top-scored for Kalamunda with 17 points while Kerrod Horn scored 15 points, Ben Smith 13 and Joel Questel 10.
