Coaches react to Week 2 of the SBL

SOME SBL men's and women's coaches shared their thoughts on how their respective opening weekends of the 2014 season went over the past weekend.

WOMEN'S
MANDURAH MAGIC
Coach – Randy Miegel

We went into the game against the Flames with some confidence following our win against the Hawks in Round 1.

We knew this was going to be a test, we wanted to get a good start and limit their run which we did manage to do well in the first quarter or so. We then went away from our structures both offensively and defensively and found ourselves down by 10 at the half.

The Flames got on a roll early in the third quarter and made us pay with some costly turnovers which saw the lead blow out. I think we would have learnt a lot from the game against the Flames and remain confident going into this weekend's double header.

ROCKINGHAM FLAMES
Coach - Ryan Petrik

Our game against Willo was a little unexpected. We knew we'd be ready this time after getting belted twice last year, but to be up 21 and have the game essentially over by quarter-time took us by surprise. The girls moved and shot the ball really well, and were really in sync for this time of year. And once we got on a roll, suddenly everyone was making plays and hitting shots.

The second game of the weekend against Mandurah is always a danger game in this league; second game of a weekend, on the road, against a team who's fresh. We did well to stay in touch in the first quarter whilst Milo killed us, but after that the girls settled in and played much better the rest of the way. To get two wins without Whitcomb, Tucker or Garbin having explosive offensive weekends was pleasing as Fletcher, the two Bournes and Coomey carried more of the load.

MEN'S
ROCKINGHAM FLAMES
Coach – Mark Utley

Was a good weekend for us and the club getting four wins. We got great service from two of our youngies, Luke Roberts and Justin beard throughout the weekend.

COLLIE CRANE HIRE SOUTH WEST SLAMMERS
Coach – Ty Harrelson

The Eastern Suns came ready to play this weekend putting up 35 first quarter points against us on some tough shooting by Ben Smith and co.

We were able to win the next three quarters and held them to just 52 points the rest of the way in a 95-87 win.

Todd Hendley, Clive Weeden and myself all put up double doubles. A good start for our 2014 campaign.
