Davey's 300th to give Cougars the spark (Week 13 Men's Preview)

Veteran guard Grant Davey will reach the 300-game milestone with Cockburn when the Cougars tackle a tricky double-header during round 13 of the Men’s State Basketball League.

Davey made his SBL debut with Cockburn way back in 1996 and was rewarded for more than a decade of service when he led the club to victory over East Perth in last season’s grand final.

But he has endured more tough times with the Cougars this year as they have struggled to match the achievements of 2012.

This week, Cockburn open the round 13 schedule away to Perth on Friday before hosting runaway league leaders Lakeside at Wally Hagan Stadium on Saturday.

Friday’s other games are expected to result in comfortable wins to two of the sides who are challenging Lakeside at the top – East Perth and Perry Lakes.

The Eagles host Stirling and the Hawks entertain Rockingham in match-ups that pit top-four teams against some of those in the bottom four.

Rockingham and East Perth will both suit up again on Saturday when they do battle at the Mike Barnett Sports Complex, while Perry Lakes should be looking to make it two wins from two when they visit Mandurah.

South West can leapfrog fifth-placed Geraldton with a win on the road, while Goldfields can close the gap on eighth-placed Wanneroo if they win at home.

Kalamunda have scored rare victories over fellow strugglers Stirling and Cockburn in their past two outings but should face a tougher challenge from Willetton, who are knocking on the door of the top eight.
