Lightning regain top spot (Week & Men's Wrap)

Lakeside Lightning are back on top of the Men’s State Basketball League ladder after scoring a pair of wins in a round seven double-header.

The Lightning conceded top spot to Perry Lakes after having their winning streak ended by South West Slammers in round six, but bounced back with a win over East Perth at the packed Lakeside Recreation Centre on Anzac Day.

Ben Beran (36 points, 10 rebounds), Brad Jackson (24 points) and Jarrad Prue (28 rebounds) were outstanding as the Lightning outlasted the visitors to win 101-91 in a tight affair.

Andy Stewart’s men had a much easier time against Wanneroo on Saturday, dropping 40 points in the first quarter and 44 in the third on their way to a crushing 148-93 victory.

Beran (32 points), Jackson (21) and Justin Cecil (26) were the leading contributors as the Lightning improved their season record to 9-1.

Perry Lakes slipped to second with their first defeat of the season and first under new coach Shawn Dennis, going down to Willetton 83-82 in a thriller.

The Hawks held the Tigers to just 13 points in the final quarter but couldn’t quite overturn a three-quarter time deficit despite a game-high 37-ponit haul from Adrian Majstrovich.

Quinn McDowell sunk 28 points for the Tigers, while Brandon Adams registered a double-double with 21 points and 10 rebounds.

On Sunday, Kalamunda registered their first win of the season with a 93-91 victory over struggling Goldfields Giants at home.

Big man Luke Nevill continued his dominant form on return to the SBL with 30 points and 14 rebounds for the Suns, who snapped an eight-game losing streak but remain in last place on the ladder.

Mandurah boast the league’s longest active winning streak after scoring their fourth consecutive victory with a 91-90 triumph over reigning champions Cockburn on Saturday.

The Cougars led at three-quarter time but were overrun by a fast-finishing Magic side powered by 25 points from Taylor Mullenax and double-doubles from Rhett Della Maddalena (19 points, 10 rebounds) and Taylor Land (18 points, 10 rebounds).

In other round seven results, Wanneroo thrashed Kalamunda 120-78, East Perth lost its second game of the week in going down 105-98 to Perth, Geraldton beat Stirling 97-87 at home, Cockburn defeated Goldfields 119-82 and South West edged out Rockingham 106-102.
