Lightning continue strong start (Friday night wrap)

Lakeside Lightning men continued their strong start to the season with a 35 point win over the Kalamunda Eastern Suns away in the only match on Friday night.

Ben Beran was impressive with 30 points and 9 rebounds, while fellow import Justin Cecil finished with 27 points. Rebounding machine Jarrad Prue was another standout with 12 points and 26 rebounds.

Kalamunda recovered from a slow opening period of just 13 points, to be down by just nine at the main break.

However Lakeside came out firing after the break and put on a massive 43 points for the quarter to the Eastern Suns 24, going in to the last break with a 28 point lead.

Young guard Kerrod Horn led the way for the Eastern Suns in just his second game, finishing with 16 points in just 20 minutes of court time. Jake Withers was the only other Kalamunda player in double figures with 13 points.

Earlier the Eastern Suns women got the home club off to a great start with a solid 26 point win over the Lightning.

The home side went in to the major break up by just three points, however unlike their Men's team they came out firing after the break, increasing their lead to 15 at the last change. They then restricted the Lightning to just seven points in the last quarter to run out with the victory.

Melissa Moyle was the Eastern Suns best with 22 points, converting an impressive 9/18 from the field and 3/5 from three point territory. New import Jennie Rintala was also solid with 18 points.

For the visitors, import Krystal Stoneking was impressive with 23 points and six rebounds, while young guard Courtney Byrnes had 10 points.

Kalamunda travel to Warwick Leisure Centre to take on the Stirling Senators tonight, while the Lakeside Lightning return home to host the Mandurah Magic.
