Wrensted hits 100 against Magic

He got his first chance as a Geraldton Buccaneer thanks to a bit of luck, but over the last five years Luke Wrensted has earned his place on the Buccs’ roster.

This weekend’s clash with Mandurah Magic at Activewest Stadium will be Wrensted’s 100th in the blue and gold.

The guard made his debut in 2008 as a 15-year-old against the South West Slammers after Michael Lay left the court through injury.

He has since taken on more responsibility in the team, and was promoted to the starting line-up for the first 10 games this season.

Wrensted said he was honoured to notch up the meaningful milestone, and still has his first SBL appearance embedded in his mind.

“I was in Bunbury for State training, and Michael Lay got injured, so coach put me on, and it was in the third quarter of a pretty close game, I was pretty stoked,” he said.

Wrensted and the Buccs will face the fi fth-placed Magic (9-4) tomorrow night as they attempt to get their season back on track.

Thomas Remmerswaal and Taylor Mullenax have led the Magic’s charge up the ladder this year, averaging 24 and 23.7 points a game respectively.

Mullenax led all scorers with 26 points when Mandurah defeated Geraldton 88-81 in week one this season.

The return of centre Ben Pepper has Wrensted confident the Buccs will give the home crowd something to cheer about tomorrow night.

“I think we will go alright because we have Peps (Pepper) back, that is another scoring guy and he can get the rebounds,” he said.

“Training has been really good this week so I think we will get the win.

“It was a close game earlier this year, but we did not have a full team, so I think we will get them this time.

“Everyone is still upbeat and confident.”
