In-form Eagles swoop past Perry Lakes (Friday Night Wrap)

East Perth Eagles are just one win away from qualifying for their first women's State Basketball League Grand Final after beating Perry Lakes Hawks in game one of the semi-finals.

The Eagles won the opening game of the best-of-three series 75-66 but still need to take one of two chances to beat the Hawks at the WA Basketball Centre next weekend.

West Coast Waves forward Sam Norwood set up victory for East Perth, finishing with 30 points, 17 rebounds and three steals.

Despite her impressive contribution, Norwood refused to take all the credit for the victory.

"We’ve come good at the right time, and as a team we’re taking the right options. I’m really enjoying playing right now," she said.

The 21-year-old, who played in 20 WNBL games last year, was well supported by Kate Fielding (14 points and four assists).

Christine Boyd led Perry Lakes with 18 points and 12 rebounds, but her side must win both games next weekend to have the chance to reach the Grand Final for the 11th time from the past 14 seasons.

East Perth led at every change, but last year's runner-up provided strong resistance and led with eight minutes left in the game. But the Eagles finished the game on a 20-8 run to ensure victory.

The Eagles had only finished with more wins than losses twice in 21 seasons before this year, which coach Anthony Fletcher said showed reaching the Grand Final would be a tremendous achievement.

"I’m very pleased with the girls’ game, we played as a team and when we were challenged we overcame those challenges," he said.

The winner of the series between the Eagles and Hawks will face either Wanneroo or two-time defending champions Willetton in the Grand Final on August 26.
