Goldfields face Giant road-trip (Round Nine MSBL Preview)

SKILLED Goldfields Giants face a massive test when they face top two sides Lakeside Lightning and Cockburn Cougars as part of a nightmare road-trip in the men's State Basketball League.

The Giants hold a top four spot after winning their past four games but their games against the second placed Lightning on Saturday and league leaders Cockburn less than 24 hours later will provide a true test of their title credentials.

Lakeside lost top spot after Total Connections Perry Lakes Hawks ended its five-game winning streak last week and will be desperate to bounce back with victory against the Giants in a rematch of the 2006 and 2007 Grand Finals, which saw each team win one championship.

Cockburn has won its last two games but will need to beat the Giants and the in-form Hawks to ensure it is still in top spot at the end of round nine.

Perry Lakes, which has climbed up to fifth spot after winning its last three, also faces defending champions Southlands Boulevarde Willetton Tigers, who have also won three straight.

The Hawks have signed NBL star Peter Crawford, but he was suspended at the end of last season and will be ineligible to play this weekend.

Sun City Plumbing Geraldton Buccaneers and Perth Redbacks have lost three and five straight games respectively and both will be desperate to get back into form when they meet on Saturday.

Mandurah Magic are back in finals contention after winning three of their last four, but face a tough test against Wanneroo Wolves, who sit in third spot with an 8-4 record.

Australian Central East Perth Eagles have signed Wildcats guard Drew Williamson and he'll be needed to help end their three-game losing streak when they face Lakeside on Friday.

Kalamunda Eastern Suns will be looking to consolidate their top eight spot when they meet ATD Stirling Senators, who sit in ninth spot and only trail the Suns on percentage, and Rockingham Flames.

Southwest Slammers will be hoping to register their first win of the season when they meet the Flames, who have lost their last six and need to get back into form to keep their finals hopes alive.
