Redbacks bite Hawks in thriller (Friday Night SBL Wrap)

Perth Redbacks have continued their impressive start to the men’s State Basketball League season with a 99-96 victory over Perry Lakes Hawks.

The Redbacks beat defending champions Willetton in week one and maintained their perfect start with the thrilling victory, which saw them come back from a two-point deficit with 41 seconds remaining.

Fresh off scoring 42 points to lead Perth past Willetton, new recruit Adrian Majstrovich was again in outstanding form with 29 points and 17 rebounds, while veteran guard Ryan Neill added 27 points.

Import Anthony Lee had 31 points, 20 rebounds and four steals for the Hawks, who are still searching for their first victory of the new season.

Meanwhile, Lakeside Lightning made it two wins from two matches this campaign after beating Wanneroo Wolves 106-86.

The Wolves won their first two matches of the year but were without star forward Greg Hire, who was in Cairns with the Perth Wildcats squad, and were no match for last year’s runner-up.

The Lightning led by as many as 27 early in the fourth quarter before Wanneroo cut the lead to 14 with four minutes left, but the home side held on.

Import forward Ben Beran led the way for Lakeside with 34 points while Seb Salinas top-scored for the Wolves with 23 points.

In women’s action, Perry Lakes’ nightmare start to the season continued with a 59-54 loss to Perth Redbacks.

Perry Lakes made last year’s Grand Final but is still searching for its first win for the season after the Redbacks overturned an eight-point half-time deficit to win, led by Marita Payne (29 points).

Wanneroo’s women thrashed Lakeside 86-58 to move to the top of the league, with Whitney Perret (19 points) top-scoring for the victors.
