Redbacks welcome new and returning stars

The Southside Mitsubishi Redbacks men’s and women’s teams will look to bounce back in this weekend’s State Basketball League games after last week’s unexpected losses.

The Redbacks will be playing two tough double-headers over the weekend against the Stirling Senators on Friday and the Willetton Tigers on Saturday. Friday’s fixture is at the Belmont Oasis Stadium (corner Alexander and Abernethy Roads) with the women’s game starting at 6.30PM and the men’s game at 8.30PM.

This will be the first opportunity to see new Redbacks’ star recruit and former Australian Opals squad member Marita Payne, who has just arrived in Perth after an international playing stint in Poland. At 6 feet 5 inches she is one of the tallest girls in the league and, when combined with her athleticism, she will represent a real challenge for opposition teams and a treat for fans to watch.

The Redbacks’ men will look forward to the return of Jon Meriweather after missing last week’s game against the Wanneroo Wolves due to a hamstring twinge. The fourth-placed Redbacks will need to be at their best to overcome the tough sixth-placed Senator’s outfit, who have won their last five games straight.

Saturday night’s games are at the Willetton Basketball Stadium (Burrendah Boulevard) with the women’s game starting at 6.00PM and the men’s game at 8.00PM.

The women’s game against the tough Tiger’s combination, who were last year’s champions and currently sit in second-place, will be a real test for the fifth placed Redbacks. It will also be a test for the Redbacks’ men, who will be coming up against the star-studded Tigers line-up that is presently in third place.

This promises to be an exciting weekend of basketball in which all Redbacks’ supporters are encouraged to come along and be vocal in your support.
