QBL Round 7 Preview - Sunday 1 July 2012

Dennis' Computers Townsville Flames vs Gladstone Power
This weekend Townsville host their toughest match yet, and having lost their last four matches, they’re got the odds against them. They’re without key player Lisa Braunberger, who leads the team on points and rebounds per game averages. The Flames will look to Aroon Edgar and the Froling girls to push themselves and put up some big scores to keep up with the Power. Gladstone are again proving to be a daunting team to contest this season, currently sitting second on the ladder and with Bibby, Haynes and Hurst dominating the league in statistics, it’s going to be a tough match for Townsville. The Flames will be hoping the Power were given a run for their money the previous night in Cairns, and will be looking to capitalise on any fatigue issues the Power have from the trip north. The Flames haven’t faced the Power since Round 9 of last year, where they came close until Gladstone ran away with the match in the final quarter, and Townsville were with sharp-shooter Jillian Haughton who contributed 30 points in the match. It’ll be a big ask for Townsville to take out this one, but no doubt the Flames will give it everything they’ve got on their home court.

Townsville McDonald's Heat vs Gladstone Power                                                                                                             Both teams head into this match on a two-game losing streak, so no doubt will have relished the week off to regroup. The Heat’s losses has seen them slip from second to fourth place on the ladder, and they’re in danger of falling further if they drop another game, with Ipswich and South West hot on their tail. They are still without young hot-shot Mitchell Norton who is overseas on representative duties, but have enough talent and strength in the pack to be able to take it to Gladstone. The Power are on the back-end of their northern road-trip, and would have had a tough game on their hands on Saturday night against Cairns. With just two wins to their name heading into Round 7, the Power really need to start securing wins if they’re to overtake Cairns on the ladder and get a look in for finals contention. Townsville shouldn’t underestimate the potential of the Gaines/Silverman combination around the basket, and likewise the Power will need to contain Blanchfield, Rees and Cedar, with the scoring power of these three proving to be dangerous.
