Volleyball Scholarship

“The Oceania National Olympic Committees (ONOC), FASANOC and Fiji
Volleyball Federation are proud to present 18-year-old Mere Serea as the
second Fijian Student to attend the USA New Mexico Military Institute (NMMI) under the Samsung Oceania Foundation Sport scholarship,” says Dennis Miller the Executive Director of ONOC.

Mere is an all round student having graduated from Suva Grammar School as a Form Seven student. She represented her school in volleyball athletics and netball. She went on to wear the Fiji national colours during the Asian Women Junior’s Championship in Vietnam in 2010. Apart from sports, she was also a senior prefect in her final two years of school.

Mere was selected based on her balanced results academically and in the volleyball sports field. In accepting her scholarship, she hopes to pursue both her volleyball dream as well as to graduate as a forensic accountant.

We are also proud to present, recent graduating student from NMMI and 1st volleyball scholarship recipient, Agatha Gibbons. She completed her two years of study graduating with an Associate of Arts in criminal justice. Besides being an excellent student, Agatha was named to the conference all-star volleyball team. In only her few months in her freshman year (1st year of college), Agatha was offered several full scholarships to complete her final two years of university. She has chosen to do her final two years at the Eastern New Mexico University to complete a Degree in Criminal Justice.

This scholarship that both Agatha and Mere have received is an initiative of the Oceania Foundation (www.oceaniafoundation.com) and leading international company Samsung. It targets athletes that are able to balance sport and academic achievements. The preferred age groups are those aged between 18-20 years who are completing their final years of high school.

Other Pacific Island students on current scholarship are in the sport of athletics, basketball, tennis and swimming and attend NMMI and Iowa Central Community Colleges respectively.

The Oceania Foundation, under the care of the Oceania National Olympic Committees (ONOC) has been established to encourage, promote and provide new and expanded opportunities for the participation of people, particularly the youth, in sport throughout the Oceania region.
