Sport has always been one of the pillars that can bring a community together in tough times – Always has been the case; Hopefully always will be the case. But occasionally sport takes a back seat, or in this case, a supporting role, as the Coomera Magpies JAFC took a moment out on Saturday to honour and remember DSC Damian Leeding who was tragically killed in the line of duty last week.
An initial thought early in the morning for the U14 & U16 teams to wear black armbands as a sign of respect gathered momentum throughout the day, and in a very special and moving moment both Coomera and the opposing U14 & U16 sides in Palm Beach-Currumbin and Labrador took to the centre square in the transition period between games, forming a guard of honour around a squad car and some of our local Policemen, partaking in a minutes silence to remember both DSC Leeding, and also the recent members of our Armed Forces who have also lost their lives in the line of duty.
The message was given to the players that they should not forget the fact that whilst they can go out and enjoy playing their chosen sport each weekend, enjoy spending times with their mates and generally having fun, they should also not ever forget those who serve their community and country both home and abroad. The brave men and women of our Police Service and Armed Forces who week in, week out, put their lives on the line to allow them to have the great opportunities in life they have. The message certainly won’t be lost on the group of young men who were part of this today.
Sport and community, again coming together as one to show respect and support to all those affected by these tragic loses.
“May angels guide heroes home”.
