The Gold Coast Umpire group welcomed Juniors President Ian Barfoot on the eve of the football season. He encouraged the group to perform at their best, and the rewards will be there at the end of the season when finals comes around.
Gold Coast Umpire Development Officer Cameron Williamson has been impressed with the pre-season.
“We have a new outlook on season 2013 as the training venue is now at Robina footy club. Michael Coe is effectively working as new Umpires President, already signing on sponsors AHS Hospitality and Con-x-ion. Deon Griffin is the new personal trainer, and has been focussed on getting the umpires ready to go for the season. And the experienced Garry McKenzie is again head coach of the group on the Gold Coast.”
“The progress made in recruiting more umpires has been very positive. We haven’t lost any umpires, andhave more than doubled our numbers from last season. The potential of some of the umpires here on the Gold Coast will no doubt tread a pathway to the AFL.”
Former Gold Coasters Aaron Hall and Matthew McKenzie have recently been added to the AFL level, and others are knocking on the door for their chance.
