Finals Overview

General:

At the end of each regular season the EDJBA plays a 3 round finals series, comprising of Semi Finals, Preliminary Finals and Grand Finals. The teams who participate in finals are:

•             All teams in Under 12 and below

•             All ‘A’ grade teams

•             All pools with 12 teams play top 4 and middle 4 finals

•             All remaining pools only play top 4 finals

The reason all teams in Under 12 and below play finals is because the emphasis is on these age groups playing as many games of basketball as possible and giving teams more opportunity to play in a final, which is a different experience.

Breakdown of Finals:

The breakdown of finals can be different depending on the number of teams in the pool and the final ladder results. The table below shows the different breakdowns that can occur.

Once ladder positions are finalised, the Grading Chair will determine which breakdown option will be used. Generally it is Option 1.

In a 4 pool final this is how it works:

Qualifying Game:  1st team on the ladder plays the 2nd team on the ladder in the Semi Final.

Elimination Game:  3rd team on the ladder plays the 4th team on the ladder in the Semi Final.

The winner of the Qualifying Game goes straight through to the Grand Final, which means they don’t play the Preliminary Final.

The loser of the Qualifying Game plays the winner of the Elimination Game in the Preliminary Final.

The loser of the Elimination Game is out of the finals series.

The winner of the Preliminary Final plays in the Grand Final.

The loser of the Preliminary Final is out of the finals series.

The winner of the Grand Final is the final winner for that pool.

In a 3 pool final this is how it works:

Qualifying Game:  1st team on the ladder plays the 2nd team on the ladder in the Semi Final.

Bye:  The 3rd team on the ladder has a Bye.

A Bye means they don’t play in the Semi Final but they go straight through to the Preliminary Final.

The winner of the Qualifying Game goes straight through to the Grand Final, which means they don’t play the Preliminary Final.

The loser of the Qualifying Game plays in the Preliminary Final against the team that had the bye in the Semi Final Round.

The winner of the Preliminary Final goes through to the Grand Final.

The loser of the Preliminary Final is out of the finals series.

The winner of the Grand Final is the final winner for that pool.

In a 2 pool final this is how it works:

The 2 teams play off in a best of 3 finals series.

Game 1 is played on Semi Final Day, Game 2 is played on Preliminary Final Day and if necessary, Game 3 is played on Grand Final Day.

Player Qualification for Finals:

Only players who have played 5 games or more with the one team during the regular season are permitted to play finals. The only other players permitted are those with special permission which is organised through the relevant Member Club and approved by the EDJBA.

Each Member Club will be presented with a qualified players list.

Court Allocation:

Each Member Club is allocated a percentage of courts based on the number of teams they have in the competition – not the number of teams in finals. This means that although we try and offer the team who finishes higher on the ladder a home court final, it is definitely not guaranteed.

Grand Finals are always played at neutral venues unless it is a game with two teams from the same Member Club. In this situation the game is played at the Member Club’s home venue.

Fixturing:

Fixtures are organised by the EDJBA as soon as the results have been finalised. This process can take a few days to finalise as there are many varying factors that come into play. The EDJBA aims to have the fixtures published by Wednesday. Even after the fixture is published, there is potential for a fixture change and therefore it is always best to check the website on the Friday afternoon. All requests regarding fixturing must be handled by the Member Club.

What to expect at Venues during finals:

  • Every venue will have a door person collecting an entry fee from Spectators over the age of 12 and players playing at that venue. Click here for current Entry Fees
  • All teams are expected to pay a team sheet fee prior to the start of the game. Click here for current Team Sheet Fee This is different from the regular season where players pay individually at half time.
  • Only two balls per team are permitted into the stadium.
  • No one is allowed on the court during half-time or time-outs.
  • There will be a court supervisor (in a fluorescent orange vest) on every court who is there to assist the officials of the game (referees, scorers & coaches).
  • Every team must supply a competent scorer (someone who has experience in scoring) who must be impartial throughout the game and remain at the score-bench to assist in the adding up of the score-sheet. They must not leave the bench until the final score-sheet result has been communicated to the coaches.
  • There are different timing rules for each of the finals. Click here for Semi & Prelim Finals Timing Regulations and Click here for Grand Finals Timing Regulations

Medallions & Trophies:

Both the winners and runners-up of each Grand Final will be presented with a relevant medallion. There is also a Most Determined Player medallion awarded to one player from the game (it can be from either team) who displayed determination, sportsmanship and courage.

There is a Perpetual Trophy awarded to the team who wins the ‘A’ grade Grand Final.
