Hot Weather Notice

The Bureau of Meteorology has predicted temperatures in excess of 40C every day this week up until Saturday 18/1/14.

Basketball SA expects a number of cancellations for games and clinics due to the upcoming heatwave this week and seeks to remind participants of our hot weather policy which can be found in full here: http://www.basketballsa.com.au/fileadmin/user_upload/Admin_Documents/Policies/BSA_Hot_Weather_Policy.pdf

Local Social Competition – Hot Weather Policy

This Hot Weather Policy solely relates to Basketball SA managed social basketball competitions. This policy relates to social basketball competitions that are scheduled from 6:00pm to 10:30pm.

On days when the actual temperature for Adelaide is 38 degrees or higher as at 3:00pm on the Bureau of Meteorology website (www.bom.gov.au) games shall be cancelled.

It is the responsibility of Team Captains/Team Contacts and Team Members/Players to check the bom website to see if games are to be cancelled.

If there is any doubt, then it is highly recommended that the Team Captain/Contact and Players contact the local Stadium/Competition Manager and check to see if games have been cancelled.

The responsibility to check game cancellations lies with the teams and players.

On days when the forecast maximum temperature as published in the Advertiser/Sunday Mail that day is 35 degrees or higher, timing rules for games may be modified as follows:

1. Referees to call a time-out at the half way point of each period, if one has not already been called

2. The quarter, half and three quarter time breaks to be extended by a minute

Hot Weather Guidelines

Basketball SA has adopted the following guidelines regarding the playing of basketball in hot weather conditions, which relates to players and officials.

Irrespective of the predicted maximum temperature, stadium managers, coaches, team managers and referees should adopt the following as appropriate, in cases of hot weather:

Stadium Managers should:

  • Take steps to maximise airflow and reduce heat build up in stadia,
  • Make an assessment of playing conditions and advise referees and coaches,
  • Cancel or postpone games if playing conditions are considered unsafe.

Coaches should:

  • Ascertain whether any players have known medical conditions which may be affected by heat,
  • Ensure that players take adequate fluid during the game,
  • Be alert and react to any signs of distress/potential distress in players,
  • Make substitutions as appropriate,
  • Utilise available time-outs.

Referees should:

  • Call additional time-outs
  • Extend the breaks between quarters

Team managers should:

  • Ensure that players take adequate fluid before, during and after the game,
  • Be alert and react to any signs of distress/potential distress in players,
  • Ascertain whether players have medical conditions which may be affected by weather conditions

No-one should ever feel as though they must play if they believe it is unsafe or they are feeling distressed.
