Gliders playoff for third in North America Cup
Saturday 14th June – Semi-final – Australia vs Germany
Another good hit-out for the Gliders against quality opposition. The Gliders shot 5 from 9 in the first quarter however struggled to contain Germany’s Martia Mohnen who was lethal from outside. The score at quarter time was 12 – 10 to Germany.
The Gliders were able to keep the score close during the second quarter with Sarah Stewart shooting 3 from 3 and allowing the Gliders to stay in touch. Turnovers in this half of the game made it difficult to put any offensive pressure on the Germans.
The Gliders were able to prevent the Germans from pulling away any further in this quarter but were unable to close the gap.
The 4th quarter saw Germany take control of the game, and Australia struggled to score. In a desperate bid to get back into the game the Gliders shot 4 from 9 from the 3 point line. Germany were able to seal the game shooting 11 from 18 from the free throw line in the last minutes.
Coach Hewson’s comment – “We are on the right path, but need more offensive consistency.”

Friday 13th June – Game 3 – Australia vs USA
The first quarter showed the Gliders that they can compete with the USA team, with them leading 8 – 4 halfway through this quarter. The Gliders showed good patience on offense which gave them some good looks at the basket, with them only to trail by 3 at the quarter time break.
The US team came out with a pressing line-up in the second quarter which caused the Aussies to turn the ball over a lot, however on the flip side they were still able to shoot at 50% from the field in this stanza of the game .
During the third quarter the Gliders lacked offensive structure and patience and were rattled by the continuous US press leaving them to be down by 14 at ¾ time.
The Gliders struggled to come back from this deficit on the scoreboard in the 4th quarter but will no doubt benefit from the experience of playing this US team.
Coach Hewson – “It is great to play under this kind of pressure, however we need to find ways to cope with it to be able to compete against teams such as the USA.”
