Venom Up To Third After Clipping The Eagles

Warrandyte Venom has jumped to third on the Big V Division One women's ladder after beating Craigieburn 54-50 in another fantastic team game. Once again it was a young Venom team on the floor, grabbing a top win away from home and pushing forward through this exciting development phase for the club.

The Venom jumped out of the blocks early and raced to a 17-10 lead thanks to some quality shooting by Carla and Lauren Sabidussi.

Hard running and a strong presence up and down the floor by guards Janelle Lucas (pictured), Mollie Burke and Meg Dargan kept the Eagles looking for answers, while the experience of captain Jaz Borella, Sharlene Dalsanto and Chelsea Ransom was invaluable.

Taking a 13-point lead into the final quarter, the Eagles picked up the intensity and fought back well to bring the margin down into single digits. In a tense final few minutes, and with Lucas and Borella fouled out, the Venom held sway thanks to both Dargan and Casey Taylor stepping up to the foul-line and finishing with class.

The Venom now sits third on the ladder with seven wins from 12 games, including three wins from their last four outings. It's a run that coach Justin Nelson is very pleased with.

"Right now finals spots are up for grabs and the girls are making sure they give themselves every opportunity to be there," said Nelson after the win at Craigieburn.

"To have the youngest team in the competition and to be scoring great results is a massive positive. The learning and experience that comes from these games is invaluable.

"To have Casey and Meg knock down big shots at crucial times is something that we all feed off, including the coaching staff. We have a quality group of players who really enjoy playing basketball together.

"It's important we keep this form up and we give ourselves every chance of making the finals."
