The latest initiative from the resurgent NBL sees three NBL teams take time out of the early part of their season to play games against NBA teams in the United States. Sydney Kings recently played the Utah Jazz and Melbourne United played the Oklahoma City Thunder on Sunday afternoon, the Brisbane Bullets round out the three-game series against the Phoenix Suns in a few days’ time.more

SCM go down by 2points on a buzzer beater

The SCM bowed out after a gut wrenching 2pt loss on the buzzer at Waverley on Sunday in their elimination final. In a seesawing epic the Cougars led by 2pts with 30 secs to go having been down in the 3rd qtr by as much as 15pts.
Dillon Stith was outstanding again with 32pts and 14 rebounds, Dondray Walker had 15pts and Ivan Platenik 13 pts for the Cougars.more

Inaugural Marty Handson award recipient

On Sunday evening at the Pink Out Cocktail party the inaugural Marty Handson Memorial Award was presented to a member of our organisation who represents all the values that the late Marty Handson valued so highly. The recipient was Andrew Bartlett from The Brighton Wolves Basketball Club who has played there for 15 years and coached for the last 6 years as a result of Marty’s mentoring.more

14/2 boys & 14/3 girls Regional Champions

On Friday at the State Basketball Centre our U14/2 boys & U14/3 girls represented the East V North in the annual Regional Challenge. This was a great effort by the two teams and an opportunity to play in a finals like atmosphere.
Both teams came away with wins and the games MVP, well done to all involved.more

McKinnon All Stars are the 2017 Premiers

On Sat 1st July MBA held its 8th All Abilities Association Tournament. With teams competing from Eltham, Dandenong, Maccabi, McKinnon and Doncaster Basketball Assoc and The Marriott Wildcats. At the VJBL’s annual commission meeting of the Large Association of the Year (2015-16) this was most unexpected but a real coup for us. U16 Vic Metro boys play at Bentleigh Tues 9th May

On Tuesday evening at 8.30pm the U16 Vic Metro boys will play the VYC Men as part of their Nationals preparation. McKinnon's Emile Boulos was selected in the squad as an emergency and will be part of Tuesdays nights state team.

U18 girls triumph in Adelaide over Easter

Over the Easter weekend 14 junior McKinnon Cougar representative teams (6 girls, 8 boys) headed interstate to Adelaide to play in the annual Norwood Classic. Four teams played in the Grand Final of their respective competitions (U12, 16 & 18 girls & U18/2 boys) with the U18 girls coached by Nathan Geer coming home Champions after defeating another Victorian team Camberwell Dragons by 12 points.more

Cougars retain Pride Cup for the 3rd successive year

The McKinnon Cougars stormed into Craigieburn Leisure Centre this past Saturday en-route to their third successive Pride Cup victory, however were made to work extremely hard for it with a one-point aggregate victory over the brave Craigieburn Eagles.
In the two-leg series, it was the Craigieburn women who had the home team off to a flyer, registering a 67-34 victory over the McKinnon YLWmore

Cougars on tour in Tassie

Last weekend the 4 Big V teams headed across the Bass for a hit out against a mix of SEABL, State and Tasmanian teams.
The trip was a great success with the main aim of players and teams bonding along with some basketball in preparation for their seasons.

Trio of McKinnon reps grab Gold in Ivor Burge Nationals

Three McKinnon Cougar athletes, Andre Spina, Monica Ward and Cameron Slacik, recently won a Gold Medal playing for Victoria in the Ivor Burge Championships held in Bendigo. The Tournament is for athletes with an intellectual disability and is held in conjunction with the Australian Under 20 Junior Championships.more

McKinnon UNITE in Clash of the Clubs

McKinnon hosted their second annual Clash of the Clubs night similar to the college “Midnight Madness”; the night is essentially to unite their Big V senior players with the domestic members. The evening was MC’d by SCM Head Coach Justin Nelson. Australia Day Weekend Champions

36 teams (our largest contingent from The Cougars)took to the court this weekend in the worlds largest junior tournament with over 1400 teams taking part. After a minimum of 4 pool games and finals we had 9 Grand Finalists, with 4 (U14/2, U16/3 & U18/3 Boys & U16/3 Girls)taking out their divisions championship, well done to everyone taking part a great effort.more

The 3 boys represented McKinnon at The East Coast Challenge in the U16 age group across 2 Victorian teams. Both teams made the Grand Final but unfortunately due to a leaking roof the game was not played. 2016-17 Tour coming to an end after LA & Disney

The snow hit Charlotte and for many was the first time they had seen it. From Charlotte we headed to San Francisco to rain!! This did not deter the party and Alcatraz, Fisherman's Wharf, Cable Car and The Golden Gate Bridge were enjoyed. From san Fran we headed to LA to a day at Disney Land & California Adventure Park before heading back to sunny Melbourne arriving back on Friday.more

24 teams headed down to The Peninsula last weekend to play in the annual tournament. This is always a good hit out so early in the season. Max Cody Named Player of the Month

Congratulations to Max Cody who has been named Big V's VYCM Player of the Month!
The Cougars balled out of their brains throughout July despite being a team without a chance of playing finals. Max Cody had a LOT to do with that! While wins were originally at a premium, they came thick and fast as Cody notched 27ppg and 8apg in his five appearances throughout the month.more

U12 Girls & Boys Easter Classic Premiers

9 Cougar teams made the trip to Adelaide for the annual 2016 Norwood Easter Classic. All teams competed very well against interstate and local competition. Of the 9 teams (4 boys, 5 girls) 4 made the Grand Finals, the U12 & U18 boys and girls. Unfortunately the older teams were defeated but our U12 teams were both victorious and took out the A Grade Championships, well done.more

A new direction for the VYC Men

It is with regret that we announce that the MBA has parted ways with our VYC Men’s coach, Daniel Smith.

Saturday night saw the McKinnon Cougar Big V program attend the League’s night of nights at the annual Big V Awards Dinner. U12-4 Cougar Girls - VJBL Champions!

Sunday morning saw the U12-4 Cougar Girls win their VJBL Grand Final, becoming 2014 East 2 Champions! Following a third spot finish in the regular season, the Cougars carried great momentum in to the finals series, knocking off top placed Casey in the Grand Final.more

Last weekend saw the culmination of another fantastic domestic season as the Winter Season Grand Final games took place at Bentleigh Secondary College. A total of 29 boys and 21 girls grand finals took place over the weekend with some great competition throughout.more

It was an exciting Saturday night at The Den as the Youth League Men Cougars won the 2014 Championship in front of a packed and excited Cougar crowd! YLM Cougars Through to Grand Final!

It was an exciting weekend for the McKinnon Cougars as all four of our teams competed in the 2014 Big V Finals series following a successful regular season. Our YLM have grabbed themselves a well-earned spot in this week’s Grand Final, whilst our SCW will look to grab 2 wins this weekend to progress through to the Grand Final series.more


After last years successful Pink Out weekend we are running another from 25-27th July at all venues culminating in a cocktail party. In 2013 The MBA raised $13,069 in its inaugural PINK OUT weekend, the 2nd highest nationally in a BCNA Pink Sports Day Event. August is the time of year that all teams are working to be playing in. This Saturday night the SCW play game 1 of 3 v Hume having finished 3rd in their respective competition, last week the Broncos got the better of the Cougars so the ladies will be wanting to turn the tables this week. Round 14 Big V Wrap

It was all about our girls in Round 14, as the MBA along with the Big V and VJBL celebrated its Girls Got Game Round. Each player was awarded a special MBA Girls Got Game pennant at the beginning of the game, to celebrate females involvement in basketball. With both our SCW and YLW coming away from the weekend with great wins, our girls have definitely got game!more

McKinnon Superstars Pool B Champions

On Saturday our own McKinnon Superstars defeated the Nunawading Spectres in The Grand Final of Pool B. They won 3 of their 4 pool games to progress to the final. Sherbrooke 2 took out the Pool A competition def Westernport having been undefeated all day. There were 10 teams from across metro Victoria competing all day. The finalists were presented with medals by basketball legend Lindsay Gaze.more

U12 Boys make 2014 National Junior Classic

Following their strong first half of the season the U12/1 boys have been invited to play in the 2014 National Junior Classic having finished 2nd in their pool. They will play against the best teams nationally at MSAC over the Queens birthday weekend. The U18/1 boys have to win a game on Friday to earn themselves a place in the U18 comp played at Frankston both teams are coached by Marcus Timmons.more

In front of a packed Tuesday night crowd, the U18 McKinnon Cougars battled it out against this year’s U16 Vic Metro team in a friendly that showcased some great basketball. Nine McKinnon Cougar teams travelled to Adelaide over the Easter weekend to take part in the annual Norwood Classic. The tournament provides players, coaches and families a great opportunity to bond and socialize, whilst of course providing some great game experience against strong teams from around Australia.more

Tough Weekend at The Den

It was a big weekend at The Den, with all four Cougar teams returning home following the Easter break. With some fierce competition, only the SCM were able to come away with a Round 6 Cougar win. Superstars win Bronze at All Abilities Tournament

The McKinnon Superstars recently represented the Cougars at the 3rd Annual Echo All Abilities Tournament hosted by the Westernport Steelers Basketball Association. The Superstars were one of 11 teams who competed across two Divisions. Other Associations represented came from Dandenong, Doncaster, Nunawading, Maccabi and Westernport.more

Changes to junior domestic competitions for Winter Season

As was voted on by the 6 member clubs at the delegates meeting in late 2013, and communicated to association members afterwards the U9/10 girls & boys competitions will be moving to midweek to accommodate the associations growth. We know this will not be popular with everyone but the delegates consensus was this was the best option to manage our rapidly growing assoc with capacity constraints.more

8 McKinnon Cougar junior boys competed as the only Victorian representative in an U19 International Tournament held on The Gold Coast last week.

The annual Maccabi All Abilities Challenge game was held at South Oakleigh on Sunday afternoon, with the McKinnon Superstars taking on Maccabi. Lori Chizik joins McKinnon Cougars

I am very excited to be able to announce that renowned coach and ABC TV Commentator (WNBL game of the round) Lori Chizik will be joining the McKinnon Cougars Girls Program immediately. Lori comes with a wealth of experience and knowledge that she will bring to our program.

This weekend both teams (U12/2 coached by Dave Meredith & U18/2 coached by Marty Handson)played their Grand Finals but couldn't quite get that last win. McKinnon played in the VJBL Inclusion Grand Final

On Friday night our McKinnon Superstars played in the first VJBL Inclusive(VIL)Grand Final losing out to a strong Westernport team 38 to 27. When they played Western Port in round 1 they were defeated by a much bigger margin 77 - 15. McKinnon's Scott Crouch won the game MVP. The team are coached by Chris Murray, with players selected from our Saturday morning All Abilities program.more

Member update on facility plans

The growth of our organisation continues unabated and we have an ever increasing very real need for additional space. With this in mind we have been investigating alternative options to provide increased court space. These efforts have resulted in a proposal to the Bentleigh Secondary College to build two additional courts as an extension to the existing two court facility there.more

Big V Cougars Shortlisted for 18 Awards

It has been a successful season for our 2013 Big V Cougar teams, with all four teams competing well throughout the home and away season and in the initial stages of finals. The league has recognised the talents of many Cougar players and have shortlisted the Cougars for a total of 18 awards!more

Cougars Re-Sign Star Import Kale Harrison

The McKinnon Cougars are excited and proud to announce the re-signing of star import Kale Harrison for the 2014 Big V Season. Kale first came to McKinnon from his native Canada in January of this year, and despite an injury prone season has done wonders for the Association both on and off the court.more

All Abilities Action

The McKinnon Basketball Association hosted the annual Echo All Abilities Tournament on Saturday 29th June. Eight teams from around Victoria, including two McKinnon Superstars teams, competed for the Lindsay Gaze Trophy. A vocal crowd, competitive basketball and a very entertaining dancing Bendigo Bank Pig made it a fun day for all.more

Cougar 12 Boys Take 7th Place at National Classic

On Saturday a team from our All Abilities Program competed in The Westerport All Abilities Association Tournament coached by Brooke Day and assisted by Paula Mueller. Cougars Host The Dallas Flower Mound Rebels

Thursday night saw our very own McKinnon U18-1 Cougar Boys take on the Flower Mound Rebels. The Rebels are a Varsity basketball team from Dallas, Texas currently touring Australia. The team consists of home-schooled students from the Flower Mound area of Dallas, with all but two players under the age of 18.more

Cougars perform well against the Chinese

The McKinnon Cougars hosted the touring Chinese men and women national Under 17 sides on Monday night in front of a packed and vocal Cougar crowd! Hundreds of fans packed the Den to see the Cougars take on the Chinese and what a spectacle it was!more

Eltham & Dandenong Tournament Round Up

This weekend 25 Cougar teams and teams from Bentleigh Lakers competed in the worlds largest junior basketball tournament. There was representation from each state and even an U18 team from the USA. Under 12 -1 Boys Make VC

The Under 12 (1) Boys Cougar Rep team coached by Paul Geer, assisted by Mark Hawker have made VC, the states top grade following a win in their cross-over game v Diamond Valley last night at the end of the first phase of grading. This is an unbelievable effort and one that the MBA is very proud of! This is the first time an Under 12 Cougars Representative team have made the VC grade in 5 years.more

Cougars Perform Well in Southern Peninsula Tournament

Over the weekend 14 of our Cougar Representative Teams took part in the annual Southern Peninsula Basketball Tournament. The Tournament provided all players with great game exposure as well as excellent bonding time with their fellow teammates. Congratulations to U16(1) Girls on their VJL GF Victory

On Friday night the U16(1) girls took on Altona 2 in the VJL2 Grand Final. At half time the score was 9-8 but by the end of the game the McKinnon girls grabbed a convincing 33 - 24 win.The team is coached by Michael Mullan, assisted by Matt Ross team managed by Michael Durkin This is back to back premierships for most of these girls having won the VJL4 competition as bottom aged players last year.more

McKinnon Big V Awards Night

Cougars Youth League Shine in July

The Cougars Youth League Program have been awarded three out of the four Big V July Awards. Megan Hendry was named SYC2W Player of the Month & Michael Osekowski was named SYC2M Player of the Month. The SYC2M Coach of the Month went to the Cougars who are coached by John Humble but during his absence in July Ian Firth lead the team to numerous victories! Family Day Fun

On Sunday many wannabe parents took to the court and challenged their cougar children to a game of basketball.The afternoon was alot of fun and thank you to everyone for taking part. On Saturday there was a terrific atmosphere at The Cougar Den for The Olympic Theme night. Bianca White Awarded Coach of the Month

Big V Basketball have acknowledged the hard work and success of Cougars Head Coach Bianca White as the State Championship Womens Coach of the Month for June. Bianca has successfully coached her Cougar Ladies to a nine game winning streak, winning all four games during the month of June. The Big V have praised Bianca and the SCW Cougars' for their excellent defensive efforts on court, which have contributed to their current second place position. MBA All Abilities Tournament Sat 30th June at Bentleigh

On Saturday our 2 McKinnon Superstar teams competed for The Lindsay Gaze Trophy. Unfortunately though not the competition winners all our players were winners in their own right. They represented the MBA very proudly donning their new uniforms from our generous grant from International Power. Lindsay Gaze was on hand to watch the 2 grand finals and present the players medallions.more

McKinnon Aussie Hoopers fly the flag for The National Teams

At Sunday nights National Team double header at Hisense arena, 12 McKinnon Aussie Hoopers were invited to act of guard of honour for The Opals and then The Boomers. The 12 lucky participants played a 10 minute game on the main court in front of 8000 spectators before being presented by the national players with a commerative medalion.more

Ex Cougar Tom Burns presented with playing singlet # 5 on Saturday night

On Saturday night when the D1M entertained The Chelsea Gulls now captained by Ex McKinnon Cougar Tom Burns the MBA took the opportunity to present Tom with his favoured # 5 that he had played in for his 13 years at McKinnon before leaving to Chelsea in 2009 after captaining the McKinnon Cougars to their D2M championship.The # 5 has since been retired in honour of Toms service to McKinnon.more

Sunday Sippers at Bentleigh RSL

We may not have a club room but this is the next best thing "Sunday Sippers" 5pm - 7.30pm at Bentleigh RSL in support of their recent sponsorship of McKinnon Basketball. Come down any Sunday and enjoy a drink or even some food with other MBA members. Open to all MBA members and families.
