Cougars perform well against the Chinese
The McKinnon Cougars hosted the touring Chinese men and women national Under 17 sides on Monday night in front of a packed and vocal Cougar crowd! Hundreds of fans packed the Den to see the Cougars take on the Chinese and what a spectacle it was! The Cougar fans were all eager to witness the talents of the Chinese sides, whilst also keen to catch a first glimpse of the 2013 Cougar Youth League sides.
The ladies tipped off the night with a highly intensive and skillful contest. Despite a gallant effort, the Chinese ladies won the game by 14 points. The Cougars however put on a stunning display at both ends of the floor, enabling them to keep the game competitive as well as allowing them to lead for much of the 36 minutes. Sinead Shingles and Sam Deeble led the Cougar scoring with 8 points each. For the victors, Haimei Wang dropped in 15, supported well by Zixuan Guo with 14.
Following the women’s contest, the Youth League Men took on the daunting Chinese men’s squad. After a tight first quarter, the Cougars ran away with it, winning the second quarter 19-8. The Chinese pulled it back in the third but McKinnon surged again in the final quarter to record a 67-43 win. Max Cody led the way for the Cougars with 11 points while Zhao Yanhao was the standout for the Chinese, putting in 10 points.
A key highlight of the night was witnessing the talents of some of our future Big V Cougar stars. Alison Page and Tailah Ross of the Under 18-1 Girls McKinnon Rep Team clocked their first Big V game minutes in last night’s game.
For the boys, Max Cody of the Under 18-1 Boys McKinnon Rep Team not only clocked his first Big V game minutes against the Chinese but also came out leading scorer through knocking down 2 three-pointers and some great contested lay-ups, not to mention some fantastic defense at the other end of the court.
The game also gave some of our McKinnon VJBL Referrees the opportunity to ref a senior game. Zeb, Erin and Richard all performed extremely well in what was a very strong, fast and competitive game.
The McKinnon Basketball Association would like to thank all of the volunteers that helped make the night such a great success as well as the players from the Under 12 Girls and Boys Representative teams who acted as Guard of Honour, floor wipers and cheer squads!
Thank you to everyone who came down and cheered on our Youth League Cougars. Stay tuned for more practice games to get you in the mood for the 2013 Big V Season! Go Cougars!!
