2 West Aussies Bound for World Championship in Canada

Western Australian Lacrosse Champions, Rebecca Banyard and Elizabeth ‘Buzzy’ Hinkes leave for Ontario, Canada, next week to represent Australia in the Women’s Lacrosse World Championships.

Australia will do battle with 18 countries (including Canada, Japan, England, USA, Wales, New Zealand and Germany) and are hot favorites to return home with a gold medal.  The World Championship starts 10th July and will run until 20th July when the Championship game will be played. Predictions are that it will be a USA v Australia gold medal game.

Last week in Melbourne, Australia played a practice match against New Zealand and defeated the Kiwi’s 21-5 in a World Cup teaser.

The Aussies have been in training for this World Championship since November 2011. Each player has been doing as many as 14 training session per week (4 weight sessions, 5 running sessions made up of 3 agility and speed sessions  and  2 aerobic and anaerobic sessions, 2 West Australia team training session, 2 club training sessions - 1 with the men, and a game).

Rebecca Banyard said, “After all these training sessions, camps and tournaments I just can't wait to put on that Australian uniform and know that I, and my team, have done everything we can to become world champions.”

An Australian team pre-championship training camp will be held in Baltimore at the University of Loyola in early July where the team will undertake its final preparations for the international stage.

Both Hinkes and Banyard currently play State League for the Wembley Lacrosse Club. Their team-mate Stephanie McRae will be umpiring at the World Championship along with Bayswater Lacrosse Club’s Suzanne Kirkby and Nicole McKenna.

Banyard earnt a scholarship to The University of Vermont to play Division 1 College Lacrosse in the USA allowing her to play lacrosse at the second highest level after World Championship. Hinkes and Banyard also have already represented Australia in Under19 World Championships.
