Adult mentor observers are critical for the future growth of our league
The best way to help umpires improve their performances is for an individual, impartial to the teams playing the match, to provide match day feedback and support.
While our current group of adult observers provide a great environment for our umpires, we need further assistance to provide the support the umpires require to umpire to a higher standard and further enjoy their umpiring.
- Want a new challenge in football?
- Enjoy football and want to assist the league grow?
- Want to make an active difference to the quality of umpiring in AFLBJ?
We are requesting support from people within our football community, of any level of experience with AFL, to attend AFL Brisbane Juniors matches and provide match feedback for the umpire.
I have never umpired / don’t know anything about umpiring – What is involved?
- Teaching umpires is actually very easy. The easiest place to start is first year umpires. Providing feedback simply covers the following criteria:
- Blowing their whistle loudly
- Communicating to players
- Basic understanding of decisions eg: high contact, throwing the ball, etc.
- Anyone can easily learn these skills and provide feedback to youth umpires.
Want to aim a bit higher?
Umpires at higher levels build upon these basic skills. Our observation guidelines provide knowledge of the skills and techniques.
Level of experience
- Those with no/very little experience – having undertaken our basic training, ready to start immediately.
- Moderate/high experience with AFL and/or umpiring- ready to start immediately with further training available.
Match Day Observing
- Attend matches relative to your involvement level.
- Record feedback on easy to use match feedback forms.
- Provide feedback to umpires at quarter breaks.
- Send assessment sheet to AFLBJ to keep on record and to incorporate into umpire training.
Flexible involvement
- Close to home - Observe umpires within the region you live.
- Flexible times – anytime between Friday night to Sunday afternoon.
- Choose your involvement - observe a few games a weekend, one game a weekend or once a fortnight.
Never been involved with umpiring? Perfect. Traditionally, only ex-umpires coached and mentored developing umpires. These days AFL Brisbane Juniors understand we need help from any many people as possible to provide the highest support possible.
