17 year old Katie Brennan has topped off a great year with being awarded a Rising Star Award through Womensport Queensland.
Katie started the year off with a win when her school team, Our Ladyâs of Annerley, won the coveted BSGSA Senior Girls Competition for the first time. Katie then went on to win equal best & fairest at the Inaugural State Championships involving Cairns, Brisbane North & Brisbane South.
In June, Katie was selected in the State Open Womenâs Team to compete at the National Championships in Perth. The then 16 year old turned it on against ACT kicking 6 goals and her way into the All-Australian team for 2009 who get the chance to play on the MCG and train with AFL Coaches on a weekend in 2010.
Katie also was selected as Captain of the Under 18 Qld team to compete against Victoria in the Under 18 Youth Girls Interstate Challenge where Qld came the closest they have ever been to beating a Victorian team at this level, losing by 13 points.
Not to be shirking her duties at Club level, Katie also won the Goal Kicking Award for 2009 with 29 goals as well as being a key player in the her club teamâs Logan Cobras 4th Premiership in a row.

Katie will be receiving her award at the Womensport Qld Gala Dinner on Friday 20 November at Sofitel.

Background Information
The Department of Communities Rising Star Awards have been initiated in recognition of there being a considerable financial burden placed on families of aspiring elite level athletes.
The Awards are therefore aimed at providing financial assistance to a number of rising female athletes with a track record suggesting the potential to succeed at the Open international level.
The Department of Sport Recreation Rising Star Awards are valued at $1600 in 2010, to be expended on travel and training costs.
