Vanuatu Rowing Association had 6 Ni-Vanuatu rowers in New Zealand last week for training with rowing NZ and for competition at the Christmas Regatta at Lake Karapiro. The squad is Tom Pata (Captain), Patrick Molu, Kevin Hivird, Luigi Teilemb, Joshua Matariki and Joel Vira with Manager Allan Kalfabun and Coach Jane Spear.

Our lightweight crews battled against the heavyweight opposition but performed very creditably indeed. The highlight was the A final of the Mens Novice Doubles an event that had attracted 40 crews. Port Vila RC had two crews with Kevin Hiviard and Luigi Teilemb in one boat and Josh Matariki and Joel Vira in the other. Kevin and Luigi were first for almost all of the race and were overtaken by a much heavier crew just on the line – coming second by only 0.33 of a second after 2,000m hard racing. . Josh and Joel were 2nd until they had some steering problems and ended up in a tangle with the lane wires enabling three crews to pass them near the finish. They finished 5th

Other combinations performed creditably with the Mens Club Double (Tom and Pat) making the B final, the Mens Club Quad (Kevin, Luigi, Josh and Joel) the A final, and the Mens Senior Quad the A final (Tom, Pat, Kevin and Luigi) the A final.

A great opportunity for our young and inexperienced rowers to see how they measure up against other rowers. Next step, the junior quad of Kevin, Luigi, Josh and Joel head to Sydney next month for the Australian Youth Olympics.

Our Vanuatu Rowing Team will return back to Vanuatu Wednesday 19th of December
