Ranking Information

RANKING CATEGORIES

Rankings will be recorded in seven (6) categories – OPEN, Junior (U20), Cadet (U17), U15, U13, VETERAN – and by weapon and gender. Fencers competing within a particular category will be eligible to earn Ranking Points at that category. Eligibility to compete in a particular event will be determined by the entry criteria of each competition event.

RANKING POINTS CALCULATION

A Fencer’s ranking within a particular category is comprised of 3 potential components.
1: Base Points for the event competed in
2: any Multiplier of Base Points according to the Level of Competition
3: any Multiplier of Base Points awarded for fencing outside of class

These are expanded on below

1: Base Points

Base Points for all competitions are awarded as follows:

1st: 10 points              5th - 8th: 4 points
2nd: 8 points               9th - 16th: 2 points
3rd: 6 points                17th - 32nd: 1 point
4th: 5 points                33rd - 64th: 0.5 points

No points are awarded for 65th place or lower.

Points gained in a “B Tableau”, an “Ungraded” competition, or a “B-Grade” competition count as if they were ninth (9th) place or lower (e.g. First place in an Ungraded competition would earn two (2)  points)

Where a “Mixed” competition is held, ranking points will be awarded on overall position. For example, in an event with three women and nine men, and the women finished overall second, third, and ninth, they would be awarded (respectively) 8, 6, and 2 points.

2: Multipliers for Specified Competitions

A multiplier is applied to designated events as follows:

• Local non-designated events have a multiplier of one (1) for ranking points
(i.e. base points only, no multiplier effect)
• State Championships events have a multiplier of two (2) for ranking points
(e.g. Third place would earn twelve (12) points)
• National Circuit Competitions have a multiplier of three (3) for ranking points
• National, Oceania, or Commonwealth Championships have a multiplier of four (4) for ranking points
• Zone Championships have a multiplier of twenty (20) for ranking points
• (2010) Any other FIE events (e.g. World Cups) have a multiplier of forty (40) for ranking points
• (2011) Any other FIE events (e.g. World Cups) have a multiplier of thirty (30) for ranking points, or forty (40) for World Championships

3: Multipliers for Outside-of-Class Competitions

Fencers may also (subject to other criteria) be eligible to apply the result of higher level competition against any active ranking category at a lower level and receive a multiplier applied to the base points earned. The multiplier for such Outside-of-Class (OOC) competition is as follows:

For example, a fencer with a current U15 ranking competes in an U20 event. Move down the table to U20 (event entered) and then move across the table to the U15 column to see 2.0 shown. Any points earned at U20 level (Base Points plus any Specified Competition multiplier effect) have a further multiplier of two (2) added for the Fencer’s current U15 ranking (subject to other criteria)

For the calculation of Ranking Points, the Multiplier effect is cumulative. That is, the final Ranking Points earned in a particular category is comprised of the Base points multiplied by any Specified Competition factor multiplied by any OOC factor. For example, a U15 fencer competes in a U20 State Championship and finishes in fourth place. This would earn the fencer five (5) points for position, multiplied by a factor of two (2) for the Specified State Championship. This would add ten (10) points to the fencer’s U20 ranking. For the purposes of calculating the fencer’s U15 ranking, the ten (10) points earned are multiplied by a further factor of two (2) for the OOC participation. This would add twenty (20) points to the fencer’s U15 ranking total (all subject to meeting other criteria)

For recording purposes, ranking points are rounded up to the next whole number

OTHER CRITERIA

The following criteria must also be considered:
·A MAXIMUM of six (6) results within the current year may be used to calculate ranking
·A MAXIMUM of three (3) non-Fencing Victoria events to be counted towards rankings
·A MINIMUM of 50% of the number of results used in the calculation of a ranking at a particular category must be results from events at that category (for U13,U15,U17,U20) but can be either Fencing Victoria or AFF/FIE/other non-FV events as notified.

· For example, at any time, an U15 Ranking may be comprised of either:
Six (6) U15 results and NO (0) OOC results or
Five (5) U15 results and One (1) OOC results or
Four (4) U15 results and Two (2) OOC results or
Three (3) U15 results and Three (3) OOC results or
Five (5) U15 results and NO (0) OOC results or
Four (4) U15 results and One (1) OOC result or
Three (3) U15 results and Two (2) OOC results or
Four (4) U15 results and NO (0) OOC results or
Three (3) U15 results and One (1) OOC result or
Two (2) U15 results and Two (2) OOC results or
Three (3) U15 results and NO (0) OOC results or
Two (2) U15 results and One (1) OOC result or
Two (2) U15 Results and NO (0) OOC results or
One (1) U15 result and One (1) OOC result or
One (1) U15 result and NO (0) OOC results

EFFECT OF NON-AFFILIATION

Regardless of the above, if a fencer is not affiliated at the correct level , or their club is not affiliated, they will have zero ranking points.
