Women's Preliminary Final Preview - Forestville v Sturt

By Dale Fletcher

It would not be a Central ABL finals series without a Forestville Eagles versus Sturt Sabres match-up.

Once again these two sides face-off in the women’s preliminary final this Saturday night at Wayville Sports Centre.

Forestville, the 2010 minor premier and reigning champion, were stunned 65-53 last weekend in the second semi final by West Adelaide and now face a Sabres side that needed overtime to eliminate the much improved Southern Tigers 78-74.

The Eagles will look for Jess Mahony to fire after not connecting on a field goal last week but the point guard seems to keep her best games for the Sabres.

Adelaide Lightning forward Mia Newley will have a tough night coming up against the Sabres pack of Monique Bowley, Brooke Sidebottom and Brigid Bowley.

A match-up that will go a long way in deciding the side that will play West in the grand final will be Caroline Burgess and Jess Fergus.

An in-form Fergus has had an outstanding 2010 season while Burgess has been a Sabres barometer for many seasons and both will need to fire to give their team a fighting chance.

Sturt seem to have more depth and options with evergreen guard Conor Holmes, AIS graduate Bree Farley and Kara Hargraves in the backcourt and former Tiger Hannah Richards in the keyway for coach Paul Mesecke.

Forestville coach Sharon Simons will look for her AIS graduate Kelsey Ireland to fire along with youngsters Jamie-Lee Bow and Alex Duncan.

Like any other August showdown between these two teams, it will be a toss of the coin.

Tip-off is at 6.30pm.
