Men's Game Previews - Round 17

(Includes Round 8 Results when the Teams last played)

West Adelaide Bearcats v North Adelaide Rockets, Sat, July 17th, 8.15pm at Port Adelaide
West 74 (Josh Bond 20, Chris Molitor 16, Blake Truslove 12, Paul Rankine 8) defeated
North 69 (Nick Hambour 16, Pero Vasilijevic 11, Michael Zorich 10, Rhys Elliott 8)

West coach Paul Bell and his team enter this match knowing that they will finish minor premiers no matter what the results are over the final two games. If North wins this match and Sturt wins the match against Centrals as expected then the result of the last game between North and Sturt will most likely decide who plays off in the elimination final. When the sides last met in Round 8, North was strengthened by the inclusion of Pero Vasilijevic who had just returned to Adelaide from overseas. Last outing, West stormed home in the last quarter to win the game when they outscored the Sabres 22-8. Anthony Spadavecchia  scored 15 points in the last term and finished the game high scorer with 26 points, he was a major factor in the outcome. Last week North fell to Woodville when the Warriors had their most productive quarter for the match in the third scoring 32 points whilst holding the Rockets to 23 points. West would start favourites in this match having won 13 of their last 14 matches. They now have 9 wins in a row to claim the longest sequence of wins in the men's competition this season. West was able to secure victory last week even though Brad Davidson did not play. Can the Rockets fire up for this game? They desperately need the win to keep their finals aspirations on track.

Sturt Sabres v Central Districts Lions, Sat, July 17th, 8.15pm at Pasadena
Sturt 111 (Jacob Holmes 28, Jan Warbout 19, Darren Ng 14, Tom Daly 12) defeated
Centrals 73 (Lachlan Parker 11, Zane Reeves, Gary Birmingham, Daniel Carlin 10)

With final positions to be decided by results of the last two games of the season, the Sabres need to win this game if they are to have any chance of playing a final at home. Last time they played Centrals, they left nothing to chance when they cleared out in the first quarter scoring 38-15 with Jacob Holmes and Darren Ng both connecting on 3 pointers in the opening minutes of the game. At the end of the third term with another 30 point plus quarter by Sturt the margin had been extended to 32 points. That gap blew out even further in the last term. Last week the Lions stayed in touch with the Eagles until the closing minutes of the match and at 2:53 remaining levelled the scores 82-82. It was only in the final 2 minutes that Forestville was able to break away. In Sturt's loss last week to West their downfall occurred when West overpowered them 22-8 in the last quarter. Centrals have been competitive in the majority of their losses this season and may prove a handful for Sturt to conquer at home if they are not on their game.

South Adelaide Panthers v Forestville Eagles, Sat, July 17th, 8.15pm at Marion
Forestville 113 (Riley Luettgerodt 34, Brad Gerlach 21, Brad Sullivan 16) defeated
South 84 (Sammy Gazzo 32, Lachlan Prest 11, Steve Pilkington 10)

The Forestville Eagles currently face an elimination final if they don't taste success in the last two minor round games. Even if they do win, they need both Sturt and North Adelaide to lose both their final two matches if they are to advance up the ladder into 3rd position. South has one more win than in season 2009 but their form since the win against Centrals in Round 9 has slumped. They have only the double overtime win against Southern from their last 7 outings. Last round Forestville took until the last quarter to put away Centrals and it required a standout performance from import Riley Luettgerodt who finished with 42 points and 12 rebounds. South had a shocking third quarter against Eastern when it was outscored 32-10 but their import Sammy Gazzo finished the leading scorer with 32 points. The performance of those two players and the numbers they produce will have a big bearing on the result. The outcome of clashes between Doug McDonald-Taylor and Scott Arnold who will most likely be pitted against Steve Pilkington and Adam Blight respectively, should also have a bearing on which team claims victory. South is yet to beat anyone above them on the premiership table and it is highly unlikely to change from this encounter.

Norwood Flames v Eastern Mavericks, Sat, July 17th, 8.15pm at Mars
Norwood 81 (Todd Matthews 21, Andrew Webber 15, David Cooper 13) defeated
Eastern 67 (Brad Hill 19, Shane Breheny 17, Jordan Dodman 13)

Norwood now sits in outright second position after both the Sabres and the Rockets lost last weekend. Should these three sides finish on equal points at the end of the minor round then Norwood would drop below both of those sides on the premiership table on head-to-head results this season. Norwood needs to win its remaining matches against Eastern and Forestville to be assured of retaining second position. When Norwood last played Eastern it looked to be in control of the match when it led by 15 points at halftime 50-35. The Mavericks closed the margin during the third period and only 2 points separated the sides 5 minutes into the last. Triples to Todd Matthews and Andrew Webber (2) broke the game open and Eastern never recovered. Since that time Norwood now has the services of Dan Thompson who has returned from injury. He top scored for the team last match with 17 points against Southern.  Eastern have Ben Madgen, who is averaging 25 points per game, back from overseas. The Flames had a purple patch mid-season when it won 8 games on the trot but recently has lost 2 out of the last 3 played. In this game, Eastern has the chance to string together 3 wins in succession - something it hasn't done all season. Norwood would start favourites at home now they are at full strength with the inclusion of Thompson.

Woodville Warriors v Southern Tigers, Sat, July 17th, 8.15pm at St Clair
Woodville 73 (Brady Brink 20, Ben McKay 17, Mark Egel 13, Brad Goodchild 8) defeated
Southern 54 (Tristan Braithwaite 11, Brandon Brine 10, Shane Boal 7)

This is the only men's game where results don't have a bearing on positions for the finals. Woodville enter this match coming off a good victory against North, and Southern having put up a good performance against the Flames, staying with them until the midpoint of the final quarter. Woodville had 5 players in double figures last outing, led by Mark Egel who finished with 22 points and Cameron Wilson not far behind him with 18 points. For Southern, Tristan Braithwaite was their leading scorer with 20 points in the loss against Norwood. He has been the Tigers' leading scorer for their last 6 matches and is having a standout season for the club, averaging over 19 points per game. When the sides last met, a dominant second term by Woodville helped clinch the win when they outscored Southern 21-9. Early in the last period the margin crept out to 20 points with the Tigers unable to bridge the gap. Since that time Southern have slipped back and they will look to win this match to finish the season on a positive note. Woodville's win against North equalled the number of wins they achieved in 2009 and they will be keen to surpass that number this week at home.
